Senator Hawley's flusical Collec-
tion.
TJue "Frankfurter Zeitung" remarks that
"the Duke of Coburg has bought a Stradi-
varius violin for $7,000. The price of old
Italian violins has gone up considerably in
recent years, since the American Senator
Hawley of Connecticut bought 500 violins in
Italy, for which he is said to have paid
$80,000."—New York Evening Post.
It is unfortunate that so well-informed a
journal should give its readers such an inade-
quate idea of Senator Hawley's remark-
able collection of musical instruments. His
$80,000 worth of violins is but a small part of
it. When last in Jerusalem he purchased 500
jew's-harps, for which he is said to have paid
considerably less than for the violins. He
persuaded a commercial drummer to let him
have 500 drums, all warranted sound and all
sound warranted; terms private. He is short
on trumpets; for those are instruments that,
as the country grows, people are less and less
willing to part with. Every man needs his
own. The use of them expands the lungs
and the reputation. They are a specialty in

harps, and an equal number of drums are in
need of no reinforcements. The senator, as
we happen to know, has never shown any of
these to even his most intimate friends. All
that he knows about them is in these floating
paragraphs, which seem to have originated in
the fact that R. D. Hawley, who died here
some years ago, had a valuable collection of

Heinrich Co.'s Catalogue.
The Heinrich Piano Co., 703 Fulton street,
Brooklyn, have just issued a catalogue con-
taining illustrations and descriptions of their
new uprights, style H concert grand and style
F Colonial which are most artistic and graceful
in design. There is about them that quiet dig-
nity so characteristic of the high grade piano.
The trusses, pilasters and panels of style A
are beautifully hand carved. The case is
double veneered with hard wood back, exqui-
sitely finished and varnished. It contains
seven and one-third octaves, patent grand
fall; music desk, full width of case; three
pedals; continuous hinges; ivory keys; high-
est grade spun bass strings; extra heavy full
iron frame, finely bronzed the full length;
handsome nickel pressure bar; extra double
repeating action, with natural wood action
rail, finely polished patent tone muffler, oper-
ated by middle pedal. It is 4 ft. 10 in. in
height, 5 ft. 5 in. in length, 2 ft. 4 in. wide.
The Colonial, style F, contains all the ex-
cellent features and improvements as in style
H, with the exception that it is cased more
plainly so as to conform more closely to the
Colonial style.
The Heinrich piano is worthy the investi-
gation of dealers desiring to handle an instru-
ment of admitted worth.
Grunewald's Ambassador.
Isidor Polatsek, of New Orleans, is again a
visitor to the City of Mexico. Mr. Polatsek
represents the mandolin and guitar factory
of Rene Grunewald, of New Orleans. Through
Mr. Polatsek's address and the excellence of
the musical instruments made at this factory,
they are doing a fine business in this republic
and their goods are well and favorably known.
Mr. Polatsek will return to New Orleans
shortly, in time for the Mardi Gras celebra-
