The Nine flethods.
Apart from singing, there are nine ways
of producing musical sound by human
breath. First, it is produced by crying into
a horn, as into a speaking trumpet. This
was probably the first kind of wind instru-
mental music. Secondly, it is produced by
blowing at the end of a whistle, as into a
flageolet. Thirdly, by causing the lips to
vibrate into a mouthpiece, as into a trumpet.
All such instruments, according to the pres-
sure of the lip, produce five or more natural
notes. Some trumpets, or horns, are of
immense power. We read that the voice of
the Shophar, exceedingly loud, issuing from
the thick cloud in Sinai, when, too, thunders
and lightnings rolled around, made the
Israelite camp tremble. According to the
Old Testament, we may infer that the seven
trumpeters, with their seven trumpets, made
