THE MUSIC TRADE REVIEW
THE "SMALL GOODS" TRADE
The Apollo Harp.
GROWING POPULARITY AT HOME AND ABROAD
THE SATISFACTORY REPORT.
Dr. G. H. P. Flagg, president of the
Flagg Manufacturing- Co., Boston, was in
town on Wednesday. During his stay he
made his headquarters at the New York
office. Arrangements are now in progress
for still further development of the Euro-
pean branch of the business. Dr. Flagg
reports domestic and export business
good, the latter particularly so.
The success of the Apollo Harp in seve-
ral styles is remarkable. The illustration
be! " Then followed, in the words of the
Madrid telegrapher, " a sad but glorious
victory " for the enemy.
They had conquered everybody except
Davy Jones. Davy, with his open lock-
er, at the bottom of Manila Bay, gathered
them in gleefully, exclaiming, "come
along, my hearties, it's not so warm down
here, and you needn't trouble now. Your
ship was blown up from the outside, any-
how, if the other wasn't. Hurry up and
pack yourselves in here, I've got a long
journey ahead.
"Guess this locker won't be large
enough by the time I get through with my
Atlantic expedition. What will the devil
do, I wonder, when I hand over this crowd
to him and ask for a receipt ? He'll have
to get De Lome and Polo to call in and
give the imps a few Spanish lessons! "
Stories of this kind were floating around
the Gratz wareroom when The Review
dropped in for news. Business is reported
as fairly active. Mr. Gratz and Mr. In-
gersoll, in their recent tours, did excellent
work and made many converts for the
Symphonies.
That check for. $100 recently offered by
Mr. Gratz for the first man to raise the
Stars and Stripes in Cuba will, at the
present rate of progress in war affairs, be
claimed before many days.
The " Criterion" Music Boxes.
A LINE OF PRODUCTS THAT IS INCREASING IN
POPULARITY.
The Paillard music box specialty, the
" Criterion " is reported as meeting with
wonderful success in every city where its
merits have been brought to notice direct-
ly, through personal efforts of the firm
members and their representatives, or by
correspondence.
The styles most in vogue for popular
use are Styles I, II, III, IV, V and VI.
The first-named, I, is convenient to carry,

represents one of the best selling styles
now on the market, with seventy-two
chords—the full range of musical possibil-
ities for instruments of this class. When
the exceptional facilities placed in the
hands of every player are borne in mind,
and the remarkably low selling price at re-
tail of an instrument made to meet every
want—$8.00—it is little wonder that the
demand is large and continuous.
The Meloharp Co., of Oneonta, N. Y.,
have temporarily closed their New York
office, at 3$ Union Square, until Sept. 1st
next. Orders will be filled from Oneonta.
The Graphophone advertised elsewhere
in The Review seems to be coming more
and more a necessity in the daily lives of
the people.
Wm. R. Gratz Enthuses
LIKE EVERYONE ELSE OVER THE VICTORY OF
OUR FLEET AT MANILA.
When The Review called to see and con-
verse with Mr. Wm. R. Gratz on Monday
at the Gratz warerooms, news had just
come to hand announcing a decisive vic-
tory by Admiral Dewey's fleet at Manila.
The jackies, according to advices from
Madrid, had met the enemy and the ene-
my, in their minds, said, "this is easy,"
and the jackies, in their mind, said,
"you're out of sight," adding, parentheti-
cally, "if you're not, you darned soon will

A FAIR PROFIT TO DEALERS.
THE BEST INSTRUMENTS.
This is the combination that is unlocking the
door to profits for over one thousand dealers
who are handling " Bay State " Guitars," Man-
dolins, Banjos, Zithers and Flutes. Are you
one of them? If not, we would be pleased to

being 1 2 ^ x 1 0 x 8 inches. Style II is also
a good portable size. The next, Style III,
known as the " Sublimette Forte Duplex,"
is a handsome and useful present, having
116 notes in comb. The cases, of mahog-
any and oak, are handsomely paneled.
Styles IV, V and VI are all beautiful in-
struments, fit for any apartment, and ad-
mirably suited for gift and entertainment
purposes. Style VI is known as the " Su-
blime Harmonie Fortissimo Duplex," has
154 notes in comb, and is fixed in an extra
richly carved case.
The last named styles are supplied, when
necessary, with an artistically shaped and
devised cabinet and stand, as shown in the
illustration. The complete box and stand
form an elegant room ornament.
Reports from the out-of-town represen-
tatives of Paillard & Co. are satisfactory.
The people everywhere are talking war,
but it does not appear to interfere with
their desire to possess music boxes, when
the product and the price meet their
views.
