city a first prize of $20.00 and a second
prize of $10.00 for the best and second best
designs for a case of an upright piano. It
is expected that while the designs possess
novelty, they shall not violate such prin-
ciples of good taste and fitness as may be
regarded as well established and generally
accepted in connection with work of this
kind, but shall first of all indicate an in-
telligent appreciation of the nature of the
instrument and of its most essential char-
acter, of which the case is expected to be
the outward expression.
The designer is at liberty to introduce,
within the limits which would thus be im-
posed, any sculptural, pictorial or colored
