Blowing Device for Musical Instruments.
Robert W. Pain, assignor to the iEolian
Co. Patent No. "581,764, dated May 4,
1897..
This invention relates to an improved
blowing device for musical instruments
and is applicable to either organs or pneu-
matically operated pianos and like instru-
ments whether employing the pressure or
exhaust air system. The initial power is
preferably derived from an electric motor.
Heretofore such instruments have gen-
erally been operated either by crank, by
foot-power, or by more or less complicated
air-exhausters or pressure systems arranged
at a distance from the instrument and.con-
veyed thereto through pipes.
The main objection to the first method
is its crudeness, to the second the labor in-
volved in operating the pedals continuous-
ly for any length of time, which often ex-
ceeds the strength of a delicate person, and
to the third method the comparative great
expense involved.
The object of this invention is to obviate
the several objections above mentioned,
first, by providing an apparatus which em-
ploys the most modern agencies and me-
chanism; second, by providing automatic
means for supplying air to operate the in-
strument, thus relieving the performer of

all laborious work, and yet allow the in-
strument tp be operated in the ordinary
way; third, by providing a simple, practi-
cal, and economical apparatus which is
readily applicable to nearly all forms of
pneumatically-operated organs and pianos
now in use, including semi-automatic or-
gans, such as the " yEolian," and when so
applied the mechanism extends very slight-
ly, if at all, beyond the original lines of the
instrument.
Musical String Instrument. Ole Breiby,
Jersey City, N. J. Patent No. 581,688,
dated May 4, 1897.
This invention relates to musical instru-
ments which are operated through the in-
termediary of a keyboard to produce the
desired notes or tones from vibrating
strings.
The main object is to produce an im-
proved and effective instrument of the vio-
lin-piano type, in which the vibration of
the strings is effected through the action
of a sliding bow, which is under the con-
trol of the performer as fully as is the bow
in the hand of a violinist, thereby produc-
ing the effect of a violin, while the differ-
ent tones desired are produced or con-
trolled through keys operated by the fin-
gers, as are the keys of a piano or organ,
but certain features of the invention are
applicable to instruments in which the
strings are made to vibrate by plucking or
striking.
G. A. Rrachhausen, of the Regina Music
Box Co., secured a patent on April 27 re-
lating to music boxes of that character
wherein no disks or notary note plates are
employed to operate music tongues or
other sounding devices through interposed
star wheels or otherwise. This invention is
an improvement upon the patent granted
to Brachhausen and Riessner on June 27,
1893.

ASK QUESTIONS;
When a piano manufacturer tells you
his pianos are the best, and that no others
are worth considering, ask questions.
Ask him "Why?"
As a matter of fact most pianos are
good; the makers would be fcclizk *.~ d?
other than their best.
The differences between them are
small, but small things are very im-
portant.
/ / t's by excelling m many little tilings
that the WESER PIANO is lifted above
the common mediocrity of pianodom.
Maybe it's the greater elasticity of the
hammers, our new duett uesk or our
praetice pedal—both patented—which
altogether make so many dealers persist
in having the Weser Piano.
