THE MUSIC TRADE REVIEW
Improvements in Reed Organs.
There are signs of an awakened interest
in reed organ music. . . I am glad that
some of your writers are calling attention
to the principle of pressure-bellows instead
of the exhaust system of actuating the
reeds. The latter method has long since
passed its climax in the production of choky
tones from twisted reed tongues. The true
method is produced by straight reed
tongues of varied widths and thicknesses,
according to the desired timbre, the modi-
fication being obtained by means of the
surroundings through which the vibrations
are carried.
In the case of pipe organ reed stops, it
is the shape and proportions of the tube
which gives the distinctive quality of tone.
The shape of the reed in the trumpet,
oboe, or clarinet is virtually the same, a
straight piece of vibrating brass, which in
itself divides the pulsations of air into the
required mathematical waves to produce
the desired pitch, while the shape of the
tube or "body" gives the characteristic
timbre.
Then, again, the fraud of divided stops
and "mutes" is being aired to such an ex-
tent that the trade will soon learn to profit
by such exposition, says O. I. Faroh, in
the Musician. We players and teachers do
not want divided stops, but a well balanced
scale throughout the compass. A number
of manufacturers are already falling into
line in this respect.
One inventor has just patented a device
in which a plurality of reeds are provided
for each tone, the reeds being positioned in

No Longer Hitched to a Star.
Any persons desiring to buy a large first-
class organ cheap should be at the auction
in Boston, May 12, when the famous
Music hall instrument, that cost $60,000,
but for thirteen years has been ignobly
silent, will be offered to the highest bidder.
A score of years ago, Boston would hardly
have thought it could sacrifice the big or-
gan, any more than it could the Old South
church or Faneuil hall, but Music hall has
been desecrated by such inharmonious af-
fairs as Democratic conventions and box-
ing matches, until now the Music hall or-
gan is only an unimportant memory.
With grand opera in a barn and Music hall
given over to prizefights, Boston is no
longer hitched to a star says the Worcester
Telegram.

independent reed-chambers, which are pro-
vided with valves connected to levers oper-
ated by the bellows, so that the valves can
be opened successively to increase the vol-
ume of sound.
Another inventor has devised a key-
board the frame of which is pivoted or ful-
crumed, so that on pressing the keys with
any desired pressure the swell mechanism
may be opened or closed during the ex-
ecution of the music by the touch.
In regard to self-playing organs, one de-
fect, in reference to the limited compass of
the bass octaves, has been obviated by an
invention which employs two distinct sets
of cuttings in the music roll papers, one set
actuating a distinct set of valves from the
other by means of a double channel board.
In this way distinct parts are caused to
stand out with clearness apart from the ac-
companying parts, as with a two-manual
organ, and the lower bass notes will have
no discordant interference.
In my experience with self-playing or-
gans I have found that it requires a musi-
cian to properly interpret the notes which
are mechanically executed, in using an ap-
propriateregistrationand proper adaptation
of the tempo. For those who are interested
in this class of musical instruments there
is a wide field for composition, as the
thoughts are not limited to the capacity of
the ringers of each hand. With a musical
nature seeking the development of one's
own capabilities these automatic instru-
ments will not take the place of technical
digitation, but will serve as an adjunct in
tracing the outlines of difficult musical
works.
