SAN
FRANCISCO,
A u g . 21, 1896.
A political campaign has few beneficial
features, for a business man, but if anyone
can profit thereby it is a music dealer.
The demand is now beginning for campaign
drums and the various other instruments
through which paid enthusiasm may be
vented.
Of course, the ultimate settle-
ment of the questions at issue one way or
another will bring an improvement in
business.
C. Rollin Ambuhl is still in the city, but
is beginning to sniff his disgust at our
prevalent fogs and declares that he will
soon hie himself back to Paso Robles
Springs. He was in San Jose last week
and says that the renting business is good
there but sales are slow. Most of the re-
sidents of the Garden City are away at the
beach and their return will probably be a
signal for a revival in trade.
Mr. Am-
buhl will go to Sacramento next week,
and expects to begin traveling again by
the middle of September.
The first concert of the season at Byron
Mauzy's Hall under the direction of Prof.
James Hamilton Howe was a great suc-
cess. Mr. Howe was assisted by many of
the leading artists of San Francisco and
vicinity and a number of his own composi-
tions, both vocal and instrumental, were
produced. Mauzy Hall was crowded with
the elite of the cjty.

ty names have already been signed, and
among them are some very clever musi-
cians. The first rehearsal will take place
some time next week.
Mr. H. Maxwell, of Sonoma, has accepted
the leadership of the Sacramento Band, and
is being well received at the Capital City.
He has been at the head of the Sonoma
Band for several years, which organization
has the reputation of being one of the best
in the State.
Sigmund Beel's chamber concerts will
begin next month.
L. V. Moore, the well'known piano man
of Portland, Ore., is making arrangements
to have an exhibition of pianos and organs
at Astoria, Ore., during regatta week.

Mr. Looschen stated in substance:—

been letting my notes go to protest, and
paying other creditors, by which means the
