THE MUSIC TRADE REVIEW
The Everett Piano.
T
HE energy and taste displayed by the
John Church Co. in all of their ad-
vertising during the past year has been an
important factor in attracting the attention
of the great public to the merits of the
"Everett piano"; carrying conviction into
the ranks of the skeptical, who have been
led to investigate this piano "as a piano,''
apart from that ingenious attachment, the
Plectraphone, which has given the Everett
a new charm, and the dealer a "selling
point" which can be recommended for its
effectiveness and novelty.
The Plectraphone is one of the most suc-
cessful devices of its kind on the market,
and it endows the piano with such a num-
ber of possibilities in the way of imitating
a large roster of stringed instruments,
that it appeals to the purchaser with
especial force.
Thanks to the intelligent management
of the manufacturers, the Everett piano
has steadily grown in popularity notwith-
standing the depressed times, and it is safe
to predict for it still greater success when
better times are with us. The Everett
piano with the Plectraphone attachment is
a big winner and worthy of investigation
by progressive dealers.

Trade with South America.
INCREASED STEAMSHIP COMMUNICATION WILL
PROMOTE COMMERCIAL INTERESTS.
HE election of McKinley is certain to
ensure an enlargement of our South
American trade. The Republican party
included in its platform the further-
ance of reciprocity treaties on the Blaine
lines. The increased advantage which
will accrue under these treaties must be of
interest to members of the music trade in-
dustry, for there is a wide market for mu-
sical instruments in the great continent of
the South. In view of this fact the recent
announcement made by a journal published
at Lima, Peru, is quite interesting. This

paper states that a few days since the
first vessel of the West Coast line, inaugu-
rating steam traffic between New York and
the principal ports of Chili and Peru, left
Callao on her return voyage to New York.
Until the present time this company has
carried on trade with sailing vessels, but it
proposes henceforth to send out a cargo
steamer regularly every two months from
New York to Callao. It has been two years
since the New York and Pacific Steamship
Company, better known as the Merchants'
Line, opened a regular steamship trade be-
tween New York and the principal ports on
the Pacific coast of South America and now
comes a competing company to divide the
proceeds of this trade and to afford to these
countries a new line of communication with

ing out had but three vessels—now it has
five.
Prior to the existence of this line of
steamers Peruvian trade with the United
States had to go by the Panama route,
where it was subjected to the overcharges
and burdens occasioned by this re-shipment
through the Isthmus. This forced the
mercantile interests in the United States
to go to Liverpool for the products of Peru.
But with steam transportation direct from
Peruvian ports to the United Sutes the in-
terests of both countries will be better
served. A steamship line was badly
needed, and it is expected that the new line
will do much toward promoting commer-
cial interests between the United States and ship company that will establish regular
South America.
