When a piano manufacturer tells you
his pianos are the best, and that no others
are worth considering, ask questions.
Ask him "Why?"
As a matter of fact most pianos are
good; the makers would bf f™ i: ° u 4 ~ <*<* will back up the strongest claims a dealer can make for them,

ACCORDING to the new Guatemala tariff
which went into effect on March 15th, or-
gans of all kinds with their exchange parts
will have to pay a duty of 35 cents per
kilogram, and 1 peso per kilogram on musi-
cal boxes of all kinds.
STRICH & ZEIDLKR are not complaining
of lack of trade; they are shipping right
along, and, judging by the orders in hand,
business promises to keep up. There is a
special demand for their styles H and F.
HE second International Music Trades
Exhibition, to be held in the Agricul-
tural Hall, London, from July ioth to July
21st, promises to be a pronounced success
in every way. The management, says a
London exchange, with a view to encourag-
ing musical talent, have decided to hold
four vocal competitions, two pianoforte
contests—one professional and one amateur
—one organ, one brass band, and one choral
competition. The last named is an addi-
tion to the ordinary contests of 'last year.
The five sets of prizes will amount to $600.
Dr. Bridge will act as adjudicator. The
judges in the other contests will be Messrs.
Tito Mattei, Gustav Garcia, Li Calsi, L.
Denza, Warwick Williams, Turpin, and
others. The pt-rizes in the aggregate for
all contests amount to upwards of $5,000,
which will be supp emented by further
awards to winners in the band contests by
Messrs. Besson & Co., Lim., Rudall Carte
& Co., Higharn & Co. and Mallett, Porter
& Dowd.
THE death is announced of Joseph
Gomien, at one time a rnfember <3f the firm
of Lynch & Gomien, which failed some ten
years ago. Mr. Gomien was a well-known
musician, and up to the time of his death
was organist in one of the Catholic churches
in this city.

IT is said that Mr. John Sommers will
sever his connection with Chase & Smith,
of Syracuse, N. Y., on July 1st, and will
engage in business on his own account.
THE music trade establishments of Wash-
ington, D. C , are indulging in "special
sales" to a large extent these days. The
Metzerott Music Co. are "offering new
musical instruments below wholesale cost,
preparatory to remodeling their new music
hall into a theatre." Sanders & Stayman
ar.nounce "big bargains in practically new
standard instruments, " while John F. Ellis
& Co. are offering "special inducements to
customers during the month of June."
FRANK J. WOODISURY, of the Jewett Piano
Co., Leominster, Mass., has been touring
the West with no small degree of success.
The Jewett piano is making steady progress
in popularity, and dealers everywhere
speak highly of it.
