HE Indicator, which ranks among- the
leading musical journals of the day as
an authority on questions of interest alike
to the profession and the trade, has lately
been gauging 1 the present manufacturing
capacity of the United States in the line of
modern pianos and organs. A tour of the
great factories of the country resulted in
several discoveries, one of which is given
editorially in the following brief comment
on the published report:
"The Indicator man with his tape meas-
ure has returned from an extended tour
among the large piano and organ factories
of the country, and his detailed report
shows beyond question that the W. W.
Kimball Co., of Chicago, have the largest
piano and organ factories in the world, cer-
tainly in the United States. The Kimball
factories, exclusive of lumber yards, cover
over eleveji acres in space, or about 500,000
square feet of floor room. The output of
these factories amounts to over $3,000,000
per annum. This is also beyond question
T
T an organ recital given at the First
Baptist Church, Waco, Tex., on the
evening of August 8th, Will A. Watkin,
of the Will A. Watkin Music Co., Dallas,
Tex., presided at the keyboard of the hand-
some Vocalion organ which was recently
erected in that edifice. That the Vocalion
and Mr. Watkin pleased the large assem-
blage present, is evident from the following,
which we clip from the Waco Morning
News:
The organist, Mr. Will A. Watkin, of
Dallas, who sold, the fine organ to the
church, evidently selected his pieces with
the view of showing the organ combinations
to the best advantage. The organ, beauti-
ful instrument both in appearance, as well
as musically, is constructed on the Vocalion
principles, which is claimed as one of the
most successful methods of constructing
organs ever known. Under Mr. Watkin's
playing the most surprising and pleasing
effects^were produced.
A
From tones scarcely louder than a whisper
through crescendo to tones even more pow-
erful than the large church room required.
The string effects especially are beauti-
ful, while the flutes and diapasons are so
perfect that they must be heard to be fully
appreciated. The Vocalion organs, it is
said, are in some respects superior to the
pipe organs, as they are not subject
to severe climatic changes as are the
others. And by the Vocalion system of
moulding the tones with the aid of pipes
placed horizontally, the tone-producing
reeds resting directly on and over the
pipes, space and material is recognized.
Thus for less money, the Vocalion organs
can be constructed and sold, giving more
power and superior service than other or-
gans that are larger. The organ was praised
and highly complimented by musicians
who heard it. All the organ numbers were
performed by Mr. Watkin.
THE new Wissner warerooms in Newark,
N. J., will not be formallv opened until the
fall.
CHAS. REINWARTH, the well-known piano
string coverer, is spending his vacation at
the Catskills. Business with the Reinwarth
house is far in^advance of the same period
last^year.
