The Norris & Hyde Catalogue.
SOMETHING ABOUT THEIR TRANSPOSING KEY-
HOARD PIANOS.
ORRIS & HYDE, manufacturers of
transposing keyboard pianos, at
2249-61 Washington street, Boston, Mass.,
have sent us their new catalogue, which
contains illustrations of their styles " N "
and " H " upright pianos with the transpos-
ing keyboard, which has been so highly
praised by musicians both in this country
and abroad. In this connection they have
thought it well to explain that the impor-
tant improvements hereinafter referred to
are not incorporated into a new and untried
instrument; but that, on the contrary, the
scale has been perfected by over a quarter
of a century of improvements at the hands
of the most skilled, scientific workmen
until the quality of tone is pure, deep and
sympathetic, of great volume and strength,
possessing a singing quality peculiarly its
own, and admirably adapted to the voice.
The following description of the Norris
& Hyde patent transposing keyboard and
their patent non-squeaking pedal action
will be found interesting to readers:
N
pose it into any other key by the slightest
effort, and in a second of time, the key-
board being shifted by a simple mechanism,
with a lever within easy reach of the per-
former while sitting at the piauo.
The keyboard may be immediately set so
the pitch will be in unison with the singer's
voice, or with the violin or any instrument,
and is therefore highly suitable for use, not
only in private homes, but also in churches,
concert halls and theatres.
The capacity for remaining in tune is not
affected in the slightest degree, and the
mechanism is of so simple a character that
there is absolutely no liability of its de-
rangement or of its getting out of order,
nor is the action affected in any way.
This ingenious invention enables vocal-
ists to practice any music not written for
their particular compass, thus opening up
an entirely new field of delightful study.
OUR PATENT NON-SQUEAKING PEDAL ACTION.
In addition to having made the piano a
perfect accompanying instrument, we have
succeeded in absolutely eliminating the
greatest annoyance in all pianos—the
squeaking pedals. Every one who has ever
used a piano has been annoyed time out of
mind with this grievance. All this is en-

a full chromatic octave. By its use the made futile attempts in this direction, but
performer, while playing the same keys, or our instrument contains the only perfect
the music as written, is enabled to trans- non-squeaking pedal action in existence.

Norris & Hyde make it a point not to
claim to make the best piano in the world.
They say: What we do claim is to manu-
facture an instrument both mechanically
and nmsically the equal of any, and to have
added improvements which, other things
being equal, make our piano more to be
desired than others—even those of equal
grade.

NEW VOLUME OK CONSULAR REPORTS OF
GREAT INTEREST TO EXPORTERS.
HE State Department published this
week Volume 12 of Special Consular
Reports, dealing with "Highways of Com-
merce, the Ocean Lines, Railways, Canals,
and other Trade Routes of Foreign Coun-
tries. ''
The consular reports are very full of in-
formation necessary to exporters, such as
the character of trade routes, the tonnage
and character of shipping lines, freight and
passenger routes, foreign weights and meas-
ures and values of foreign coins. The con-
tents are indexed first under grand geo-
graphical divisions and secondly for the
convenience of those seeking specific knowl-
edge under eight general heads, such as
"Bridges," "Canals," "Inland Naviga-
tion, " ' 'Railways,'' etc. Under each of these
heads the subjects are arranged geographi-
cally, the countries being arranged alpha-
betically under the title of each continent.

Tuning.....
Is a mighty important branch of the piano
business, and to tune well one should under-
stand the character and construction of the
instrument. The mystery of the piano action
should be made clear. Acoustics and me-
chanics should be studied. Salesmen as well
as tuners should know intimately the techni-
cal part of the piano. They can talk more
intelligently about it. The best book, at
least so pronounced by eminent authorities
upon this matter, is
'
"The Piano"
a book written by an acknowledged expert.
It is of convenient size, cloth bound, illus-
trated, and over one hundred pages. You
can have a copy by sending one dollar to the
publisher,
