Tuning.....
Is a mighty important branch of the piano
business, and to tune well one should under-
stand the character and construction of the
instrument. The mystery of the piano action
should be made clear. Acoustics and me-
chanics should be studied. Salesmen as well
as tuners should know intimately the techni-
cal part of the piano. They can talk more
intelligently about it. The best book, at
least so pronounced by eminent authorities
upon this matter, is
" The Piano "
a book written by an acknowledged expert.
It is of convenient size, cloth bound, illus-
trated, and over one hundred pages. You
can have a copy by sending one dollar to the
publisher,

naturally exercise a big effect upon the
mercantile and financial affairs of all the
concerns largely interested in it. It is pre-
dicted that the suspension of this bank will
cause many failures.
While passing through the lobby of the
Windsor at Montreal, I ran across Gerhard
Heintzmann, who, accompanied by his
wife, was just returning to Toronto from
an extensive trip through the Maritime
Provinces. Mr. Heintzmann was looking
hearty, and wished to be remembered to
his many friends in the United States.
While away he booked a large number of
orders for pianos. The Gerhard Heintz-
mann pianos are decidedly popular through-
out Canada. I have heard them praised
warmly many times while on this and other
trips.
L. E. N. Pratte is one other piano manu-
facturer in the city of Montreal, aside from
the Featherston Co. Mr. Pratte has lately
removed his factory to Huntington, a city
about fifty miles distant from Montreal,
where his brother superintends the manu-
facture of the Pratte piano.

HE Russell Piano Co., of Chicago, will
probably occupy their new factory the
first week of August. Rapid progress has
been made by the contractors. This firm
inform us that business with them* is quite
active, hence they are extremely anxious to
get into their new quarters so as to be
ready to catch up with fall orders.
The Lindeman & Sons Piano.
T
HE Lindeman & Sons Piano Co. are
destined to build up a magnificent
trade in the fall. They are getting out
some handsome new styles which will do
much to increase the business of this firm.
During Mr. Norris' recent trip he made
some valuable connections, and was assured
by many prominent dealers that they
would not overlook the "Lindeman' in
making up fall stock. Under the energetic
management of the present officers, the
Lindeman piano will be heard from in the
fall.

CELEBRATED
STEGER
MONG the factories preparing for the
expected demands of trade the com-
ing fall, is that of George Bothner, 135-137
Chrystie street. He is turning out piano
actions which are becoming more popular
every season. Years ago the senior George
Bothner won a high reputation for the
quality of his wares, and on his books can
be found a large number of leading firms
who have vised the Bothner action since the
business was in its infancy. If there is
any secret in Geo. Bothner's success it is
that he has not relied upon the past reputa-
tion of his wares, but has aimed and suc-
ceeded in keeping in touch with the de-
mands and requirements of the trade of to-
day.
In this connection it may be said that
George Bothner, Jr.,who is general manager
and superintendent of the business, has
contributed in no small measure to the
present standing of the Bothner wares.
He is as keen and progressive a business
man as he is a master of the practical de-
partments of his craft. During a recent
tour through the West he was afforded sub-
stantial proofs of the popularity of the
Bothner actions by the receipt of large
orders from some of the leading piano
manufacturers. It is pleasing to see this
old and honored house enlisted in the army
of progress, keeping step with a vigor and
enthusiasm that means success.
