THE MUSIC TRADE REVIEW.
and is too weak to stand severe strains, but it
unites with other metals, and it is in this alloy
state that its great value lies. Small percent-
ages up to 10 per cent, of silver, nickel, copper,
tin, etc., make it harder, stronger and better
wearing without affecting its beautiful color or
its lightness.
The power of aluminium bronzes to resist
oxidisation exceeds that of all similar metals.
Ordinary acids have little effect, nor has ammonia
or sea water, which should commend these
bronzes to ship builders and to sanitary and
other engineers, in all cases where steel is un-
suitable. There are many similar considerations
which must lead gradually to its superseding all
other metals for these and many other purposes.

1. This very excellent song will add to Mr.
Coverly ( s reputation. It is written for bass or
contralto, and its effective scoring displays the
musician. The verse is by England's greatest
poet, the late Tennyson.
2 t 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Six new songs by a noted mu-
sician whose name is a guarantee of their excel-
lence. The arrangements are simple but ingeni-
ously effective. They are within the scope of all
who desire high-class songs suitable for parlor or
concert. Should win a foremost place in the
appreciation of the musical public.
8. A splendid song in the hands of a good
singer. Mr. Wilson has set Edward Oxenford 's
spirited words to appropriate music which is full
of color a la militaire. It is arranged for
medium voice.
9. A good waltz song with words and mu-
sic to commend it.
10. 11. Mr. Spencer has given us two songs of
more than average merit. No. 10, with its mu-
sical setting a la barcarolle, is especially pretty.
The words of both songs, by Lottie Blair Parker,
are full of pleasing sentiment.

3. A charming trifle ; light and vivacious, as
a Polka Frangaise should be.
4. This composition will not set the musical
world afire. The melody is pleasing—rather too
pleasing.
5. A graceful and well-written gavotte, which
should prove a favorite.
We have on our desk from this enterprising
house a large number ofpaitsongs and anthems-
which are carefully edited and should meet with
a demand from singing societies and churches.
Also a collection of moderately easy classical!
pieces, entitled "Classic Leaves," which are
of special value to teacher and pupil, owing to
the accompanying paragraphs as to their special
characteristics and the proper mode of playing
these pieces. They are edited by Dlgby Trappe.

1, 2. Two very graceful and well-written dance

1. Bells Across the Sea.

I, 2, 3, 4. Four compositions from Mr. Pep*
per's pen which should win a large share of
popularity. No. 4 is of the popular order, with,
waltz refrain. Verse is by the ubiquitous Geo.
Cooper. The other numbers are of a higher
order, and refined and tender words are set to
pleasing melodies throughout,
5, 6. Two waltz songs, written apparently
for the market, of average merit. Will win
popularity among lovers of this class of song.
7,8. Ethiopian classics. Will become known.
1. Galop Militaire.
H. W. Lindsley.
2. The New.York Girl, March.
Eiuil Katzenstein.
1. Mr. Lindsley'a galop has the merit of be-
ing tuneful or '' catchy '' and well arranged. It
has been played by Sousa's band—hence is
bound to become widely popular.
2. With such an attractive name Mr. Katzen-
stein's march could not fail but be pretty. Were
it otherwise it would be a gross libel on the
New York girls, and a disappointment to the
innumerable young men who are going to march
and dance to this attractive piece of music—for,
by the way, it is also a l ' Two Step.''
JOHN CHURCH CO., NEW YORK AND
CINCINNATI.
From this house we have received ten melo-
dious and simply arranged four-hand piano
pieces, without octaves. They are by Charles
Becker, and should receive a welcome from
teachers and others desiring well written and
tuneful compositions of this character.
Mr. A. W. Barrett, of Toledo, O., has sent us
a charming and well written Mazurka, entitled
1
' Dahlia,'' which should meet with favor from
the musical public.
