THE Marshall & Wendell Piano Manufactur-
ing Company, of Albany, have recently issued
a new catalogue of their latest styles of instru-
ments. It is well printed and full of interesting
and live matter concerning their house and its
product. Dealers should look it up and give
the Marshall & Wendell instruments their con-
sideration. It is a house with an old and dis-
tinguished reputation, and their instruments
have always commanded the high esteem of the
trade.
IT is announced that the World's Fair stock-
holders are to be paid a dividend of 10 per cent.
The Fair has a cash balance of $1,415,000.
L,OTS of old country musicians have got jobs
through the Labor Bureau at the Barge Office,
says the World. The Musicians' Union won't
let them play in any union band unless they
have been in the country six months. A man
might starve to death in that space of time, so
they come to the Free Labor Bureau and do the
best they can. The former first trombone
player of Hans von Bulow's band is now getting
$25 a month down on Long Island in a private
insane asylum as the director of an orchestra of
paranoiacs. When he is in the country long
enough he will seek admission into the union
and get something like wages, but meantime he
owes his chance of a livelihood to the Free
Labor Bureau.

Brothers and the Briggs Piano Company in
Winona, Minn., have recently issued a very ef-
fective and neat advertisement in the form of a
leather card case, on which appears the follow-
ing : " Compliments of Babcock & Elmer,
dealers in Decker Brothers' pianos. Reception
days : Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thurs-
days, Fridays, Saturdays, 76 East Third street,
Winona, Minn." Inclosed in the case is a
celluloid heart, showing the Briggs piano under
the quotation from Hamlet: '' You would play
upon me." It is evident that our friends in
Winona are not letting the '' grass grow under
their feet " in the way of go ahead advertising.
BABCOCK
W. B. TODD has leased the building corner of
West Main and South Hester streets, says the
Norwalk, Ohio, Reflector, and will put in a stock
of pianos and organs, handling several of the
leading kinds. Mr. Todd is an energetic busi-
ness man, thoroughly understands the business
in which he is about to embark, and will un-
doubtedly make a success of his new under
taking.
A WELL-KNOWN firm of furniture dealers in
this city are offering a novel inducement to
secure a wider sale for their goods. They volun-
teer to give an " orchestra " with a $55.00 par-
lor suite, each piece being provided with a
mechanical arrangement whereby, as they
graphically explain, " a slight pressure causes
the outpouring of sweet, enchanting music."
As a further inducement they offer to give this
household orchestra on " time." What next ?
A SPLENDID specimen of the instruments
turned out by the Pullman Company is on view
in the warerooms of Jack Haynes, 20 East 17th
street. The tone is a brilliant and powerful one.
The case is elaborate ; perhaps a little too much
so for a popular priced instrument, but all in all
it is an instrument Jack Haynes has confidence
in. And that amounts to a great deal.

of his house.
THE following item of news which appeared
in a Washington paper recently will be of inter-
est to some of our piano manufacturers and
piano supply houses :
If the reports be true that the government of
Nicaragua has issued orders to the mahogany
company, J. S. Emery & Co., of Boston, that
no more mahogany can be shipped from the
Mosquito country under the present concession
the effect may be serious upon companies in this
country that find it absolutely essential to use
this wood. This Boston firm has had for some
years a concession from the Mosquito govern-
ment for the cutting of mahogany trees in that
country. A gentleman who recently arrived
here from the Mosquito belt says that this con-
cession was supposed to have twenty years to
run, and that by that time the probability was
that the Mosquito country would be denuded of
the most valuable mahogany timber. This con-
cession was obtained from the Mosquito govern-
ment and is one with which the Nicaraguan gov.
eminent was not supposed to have anything to
do. There is nothing in the information re-
ceived by the United States government here to
indicate that there has been any objection on the
part of the American merchants residing in
Nicaragua to the action of the British naval
commander. On the contrary, he is reported to
have been of great benefit to the American mer-
chants in the absence of a United States man-
of-war.
BROOKLYN, N. Y.—Mr.Jno. Huffington Noble,
one of Brooklyn's moat prominent musicians,
died at his home, 580 Hicks street, last Wednes-
day, after a prolonged and painful illness. He
was 29 years old. His mother survives him.
