Will you be kind enough to inform the under-
signed how the "Crown " pianos and organs,
manufactured, I believe, in Chicago, rank ?
Are the so-called awards and medals claimed by
the manufacturer as being received at the World's
Fair genuine ? So many claims have been made
by different houses in this connection, I am
anxious to clear away existing doubts in respect
to the instruments inquired about.

It is quite evident that our correspondent did
not visit the World's Fair, or has not been a close
student of the trade papers for the past twelve
months. If he had been, the intormation which
he desires would be unnecessary.
In business circles we judge a man or products
by the results achieved ; and when these results
are achieved by straight-forward methods, and
in an endeavor to enable the products to win
simply on their merits, it enables us to form a
very high estimate of the manufacturer of the
product and the excellence of the product itself.
This can with safety be applied to the '' Crown ''
pianos and organs, and their manufacturer, Geo.
P. Bent.
As to the "rank " of the "Crown " instru-
ment and the " genuineness " of the awards re-
ceived at the World's Fair by Mr. Bent, the best
answer we can make is to supply our correspond-
ent with a few items on the subject. More ex-
haustive information will be furnished by apply-
ing to Mr. Bent, who seems happy to answer all
enquiries on this subject.
The '' Crown '' pianos and organs made a
record at the World's Fair that any house might
be proud of. The musical instrument judges
awarded Mr. Bent four medals and diplomas
covering seventeen points of merit as to tone,
touch, etc., and it is by reading the diplomas
carefully one can form an estimate of the high
opinion in which they are held. The popularity
and excellence of these instruments was further
emphasized in a very forcible manner by their
use in thirty-two State and foreign buildings,
where they were officially selected for use in the
parlor and reception rooms. There they under-
went a severe test and careful investigation from
visiting thousands, and the autograph letters of
endorsement received by Mr. Bent from the
officials of the Fair and the commissioners from
the different States and Territories using
" Crown " pianos are tributes to these instru-
ments of so strong and complete a nature as to
entirely satisfy my correspondent's inquiries as
to their " rank."
We would say in addition that not only are
the medals and awards received by Geo. P. Bent
'• genuine," but they are well deserved, for, in
our opinion, the ' Crown " instruments rank as
nuritorions from every standpoint.
The "Crown" pianos are comparatively
"youngsters" in the field, but they reflect in
thtir general excellence what can be accom-
plished by a competent and energetic manufact -
urer. The tone character, appearance and gene-

ral qualities of the '' Crown '' instruments
stamp them as among meritorious instruments,
and they are being rapidly pushed to the front
by business methods that display the intelligent
and forceful mind of Geo. P. Bent.
Yes, our correspondent can feel safe in looking
up the "Crown" instruments. All who have
made their acquaintance seem to be gainers.
They have " r a n k " and " h o n o r s " and will
make friends wherever sold.

ftN organ for the Jesuits' Church, Shanghai,
^> has been built for the use of the fathers by
a Chinese convert. The pipes are of bamboo in-
stead of metal, on the customary square wood
form. It is said that the sound is incomparably
sweet. " I have never heard in Europe," a cor-
respondent writes, "anything so beautifully
soft and pleasant to the ear; it is, indeed,
angelic and superhuman." In the course of
some experiments made with the bamboo a few
years ago notice was especially taken of the
delicious, soft, and pure tone these tubes gave
out. As bamboo can be obtained from the thick-
ness of a pen to pieces possessing a diameter of
twelve inches, this natural material is available
for open diapason pipes down to CC. It might
be worth while for some of our enterprising
builders to procure lengths of bamboo and see
how it is adapted for making organ pipes.
Artists Favor the " Kimball."

The great artists of the Metropolitan Opera
Co., which has just concluded a successful en-
gagement at the Auditorium, Chicago, have
given the manufacturers written expressions of
their unanimous approval of the Kimball pianos.
It is said that the artists of every other grand
opera company which has visited Chicago of
late years, have also heartily endorsed these in-
struments, which taken in connection with the
highest honors received by the Kimball at the
World's Fair, is considered the greatest triumph
