complete series of all but one of the parts played
by John Kemble, in the actor's own handwrit-
ing. The collection changed hands for ^1,16.
The total for the three days was £2 295.

Miss Marie Brema has been definitely engaged
to take part in the next Bayreuth festival. She
will sing the part of " Ortrud " at the first per-
formance of "Lohengrin," alternately with
Frau Mailhac in this part, and with Frau Mal-
ten in that of " Kundry " i n " Parsifal. " This
is the first occasion on which an English singer
has been entrusted with a role of the first im-
portance at Bayreuth, and the significance of
the compliment is not easily to be overestimated.
Miss Brema studied under Professor Alfred
Blume, who also counts among his most dis-
tinguished pupils Mr. Hutchinson and Mr.
Plunket Greene.

HENRY J. CRIPPEN.

regret to announce the death of Mr.
Henry J. Crippen. president of the
Prescott Piano Company of Concord, N. H.,
which occurred at his home in that city, Decem-
ber 24th. His death was due to apoplexy.
Mr. Crippen was born in Canterbury, England,
in 1837, but has resided in this country since
early childhood. He was educated in the Bos-
ton public schools, and graduated from Dart-
mouth college in the class of 1861. Mr. Crip-
pen studied law with Hon. Henry P. Rolfe, and
occupied various positions in the government
service at Washington, which he resigned in 1872
to engage in mercantile pursuits. Mr. Crippen
was a member of the house of representatives in
1889 and of the board of aldermen in 1891 '93.
His death will have no direct bearing on the
business of the Prescott Piano Company, which
will continue unchanged.
ARTISTIC PIANOS,
jffiK COLLECTION of superb pianos may be
^=s seen in the New York warerooms of Wm.
Knabe & Co. There are grands and upright
instruments of wondrous beauty. Principal
among them is the noble grand which attracted
such widespread attention among World's Fair
visitors to the warerooms of Lyon & Healy dur-
ing the summer. The instrument, which is a
full concert grand, was made from designs
specially prepared for Messrs. Knabe & Co. by
Thomas E. Colcutt, the noted English architect.
The case foundation is of solid rosewood.
Around the body of the piano are fourteen
panels, representing allegorical musical subjects.
The music desk is of satinwood, inlaid with
rosewood, to contrast with the main body of the
case. The most beautiful portion of the case is
the fall board or cover. It is of solid rosewood,
and on it are depicted, by the inlaying of corn-
colored satinwood, cupids, fawns and nymphs,
playing upon the lyre of Apollo and the pipes
of Pan. The piano is supported by legs of rose-
wood in colonial designs, surmounted by richly
carved capitals of boxwood, in Corinthian style.
This beautiful and artistic case is the worthy
abode of the instrument itself, whose tone is a
very marvel of velvety richness and singing
musical quality.

of " The Church Organist, " a collection of pieces
for church use, which are selected, arranged and
edited by Chas. H. Morse, organist of Plymouth
Church, Brooklyn. It is a book of 106 pages,
and the works of twenty-seven composers are
included.
We cannot speak too highly of this excellent
compilation of effective extracts from the works
of the leading composers of organ music. The
selections are of excellent character, well adapt-
ed for church service, effectively arranged and
not over difficult, and should prove a favorite
with ambitious young organists, who are often
times at a loss for appropriate selections. " The
Church Organist " has met with the highest
praise from such organists as Mr. E- M. Bow-
man, Wm. C. Carl, R. Huntington Woodman
and many others throughout the States.
