A SUIT FOR DAMAGES.
THURSDAY'S Herald contained an extended

account of the little difficulty into which
the indiscretion of Kdward Pond, the head of W.
A. Pond & Co., has thrust him. The difficulty
consists of a war of fisticuffs which Mr. Pond
had with a Mr. Frank Lee, on Monday, at the
Hotel Viano, in East 18th street, and the cause
was a lady ; Miss Blsa Gregori.
Miss Gregori is a very pretty girl, who has
studied music in Italy and has had a short ex-
perience on the stage in this country, says the
Herald. She made her debut in this city a few
months ago as the prima donna of "The Isle
of Champagne " company.
She went to William A. Pond & Co. 's store
Monday morning to make arrangements for the
publication of some original musical composi-
tions.
After making satisfactory temis she
spoke about renting a piano, needing one for
practice. When she ltft Mr. Pond accompanied
her to the Hotel Viano, in East 18th street. He
entered the Hotel with her to discuss, he said,
the cover which should be used on her new pub-
lication.
They sat in the parlor for a few
minutes discussing colors and designs for covers.

Enterprising dealers all over the Country are

Miss Gregori soon concluded that Mr. Pond
was becoming offensively familiar in his remarks
and tried to get rid of him. There were other
persons present in the room and she did not wish
to attract attention by being abrupt, and so when
he asked for permission to call again she granted
it.
She went out in the afternoon and was not
home when Mr. Pond called at six o'clock. He
sat down in the parlor and waited for her. She
finally entered, accompanied by Mr. Lee. She
passed Mr. Pond on her way to the elevator
without recognizing him. He called out to her :
" Good evening ! "
" I turned toward him," she said yesterday,
" and he put up his hand, beckoned to me with
his finger, and said in an excited manner,
' Come here.'
" I said, ' What is it you want ?'
" ' Sit down here,' he replied.
"Being astonished at his manner I did not
sit down, but stood looking at him.
" He said, ' Where have you been ?'
" ' I think that is none of your affair,' I re-
plied.
" ' Who is that man ?' he asked, pointing at
Mr. Lee.

sumably intended for Mr. Lee.
" Being utterly astounded at Mr. Pond's con-
duct and speech I turned and walked toward
the elevator, and went to the proprietress of the
hotel and informed her that he had insulted me
and that I wished him put out of the hotel."
A POINTS OF SUPERIORITY
DID NOT SEE THE FIGHT.
Miss Gregori believes that Mr. Pond's conduct
was the result of too frequent visits to the hotel
cafe while he was waiting for her. She did not
see him again, as after a lively fight with Mr.
Lee he left the hotel.
Mr. Lee's description of the wrangle in his
complaint is short. He says Mr. Pond struck
him with clenched fists on his shoulder, head,
neck and ear, inflicting great bodily pain and
anguish and $10,000 worth of damage to his
feelings. The assault, he declares, was unpro-
voked.
Lawyer A. H. Hummel told me that his
client had interfered after Miss Gregori left the
room and had remonstrated with Mr. Pond for
his conduct. A blow was the answer to his
first word, quickly followed by several others.
Before Mr. Lee had sufficiently recovered from
the onslaught to properly defend himself Mr.
Pond had hurriedly left the premises.
At a mass meeting held by the International
Piano Makers' Union, at 342 West 42d street,
yesterday, the dues for the sick benefit fund
were fixed at 25 cents per month. A committee
from the Central Labor Federation, that recom-
mended an amicable settlement with the United
Piano Makers, was told that an amalgamation
would be possible only if the United Piano
Makers adopted the new constitution of the
Grand Lodge. Resolutions were passed indors-
ing the platform of the Central Labor Feder-
ation ; also declaring that the present financial
and industrial crisis had been caused by corrupt
class legislation.
BENNO SPIES, 292 Fast Houston street, New
York, was recently arrested and taken to Essex
Market Court on a charge of having sold a piano
which he rented from Albert H. Hangold, 106
2d street, to Marcus Weil, of 321 Houston street,
