THE MUSIC TRADE REVIEW.
Mons. Guillot, boulevard St. Denis 16, I'aris.—An
upright with nice panel paintings on a light background
shown by this maker is a well made instrument. So is
a black piano, but the engraving on the wood, now very
presentable, must in the ordinary course of events be-
come filled with dust, and the crevices are sometimes
so tiny that it will be almost impossible to remove it,
and it will show an ugly patch of grey. Pianos are so
much better when made to stand the dust, than so that
dust will spoil their appearance. Mary pianos in this
section have this kind of ornamentation, and where it
has a smooth finish of course the dust will not lodge so
much.
Mons. Frantz, rue Lafayette 64, Paris.—A handsome
looking, large upright Is the sole exhibit of this maker,
who, by-the-way, shows some gold medals. The instru-
ment is in the natural wood, polished, and with embel-
. lishments of lacquered brass. The action as usual, tone
good.
Erard, Nicolas, Paris.—Two good-looking uprights,
both of dark wood ; one with gold, and the other with
dull silver marqueterie.
Mons. Flocke, rue Morand 9, Paris.—A show of ex-
cellent pianos; also of medals of gold, silver and bronze.
The iron frame of a grand of capital workmanship is
shown. The grand piano is a good one ; the uprights
are good also—nicely ornamented—some dull polished,
others with the usual high lustre.
H. Bernard et Cie., rue de Poissonniere 54, Paris.—
Three uprights, all in dark woods ; one, beautifully fin-
ished, is of a dull polish with veneer panels of bright
polished wood, which is thrown into relief by the con-
trast. This maker displays the three classes of medals.
Mons. Lafontaine, rue de Charonne 170. — This
name and address appear upon a card placed above a
fine looking grand piano which, nevertheless, is very
deserted in appearance, as it is locked, with no circular,
catalogue or attendant to answer questions or to enable
visitors to hear the tone of what may be a most satis-
factory exhibit. Perhaps this may be remedied shortly,
as the stand has the appearance of being in an incom-
plete state generally. Note : since the above was writ-
ten,.-this stand has been filled by two nice looking
uprights.
Mons. Baruth, Lycn.—Two pianos a grand and an
upright, both in dark woods, well finished. This maker
has obtained bronze and silver medals at former exhibi-
tions.
E. Boussuge, Paris, shows two good looking up-
rights of the style of piano that is very useful in fam-
ilies where the usage is not too gentle.
Mons. Aucher Freres, boulevard de Belleville 27, Paris,
—Four capital uprights plainly made, one only with a
little carving that well sets off the dark wood of which
it is formed. A case of medals ornaments this stand.
Mons. Avisseau, rue de Bondy 52, shows only a
well made upright in dark wood. Very substantial in
appearance.
C. Winther, rue Denfert-Rochereau 77, Paris.— A
novelty in one of the two pianos here shown is a fine
sheet of plate glass as a front panel above the keyboard.
It may give resonance, but as the tone was not heard
that must be left to conjecture. It certainlv does not
enhance the beauty of the instrument; though it might
do so, were other details carried out in the same ma-
terial. The other piano shown by this maker is a dark
upright with a little carving on the panels.
Mons. Toudy, Paris, shows a plain looking dark up-
right with good tone and action.
Mons. Leveque, rue St. Antoine 10, Paris.—Another
dark upright with nice marqueterie. For this instru-
ment it is claimed that it is very easily taken to pieces
and that it gives great vibration.
Mons. Lequerinais, Passage Menilmontant 9, Paris.—
One good upright in a very plain dark wood case.
