PIANO AND ORGAN
FELTINGS
LYON & HEALY-
No better evidence of the progress of the music trade
in the great West can be adduced than that which is
supplied by the career of this magnificent house. They
deal in every form of musical instrument, and every ar-
ticle sold by them bears unequivocal testimony to the
ability and care of its maker. Their business has ever
been in a state of expansion. Their firm name is a
synonym for all that is honorable, enterprising, and
brilliant in trade.
Of late Lyon & Healy have leased additional space for
their already extensive ware-rooms, which will now be
double their former size. The magnitude and beauty
of these splendid rooms must be seen to be appreciated.
They are palatial in their spacious distances, and ele-
gant and orderly in their arrangements.
Some idea of this gigantic concern may be formed
when we state that their pay roll contains the names of
ever three hundred employees. All of these, whether
salesmen, clerks, or mechanics, are men of high intel-
ligence and pleasing manners and all are on the best of
terms with the heads of the firm.
Lyon & Healy handle the Steinway pianos, of which
they sell enormous quantities; they also do a brisk
trade in the J. & C. Fischer. Their harps, organs, brass
band instruments, flutes, clarinets, drums, banjos, gui-
tars, mandolins, etc., form a brilliant and most attrac-
tive display. Mr. Lyon. on his periodical visits to Eu-
rope, selects with great care the best violins, harps,
music-boxes, and brass instruments. The last-men-
tioned invariably come from the celebrated Higham
factory near Manchester, England. Lyon & Healy are
the sole American representatives of the Higham brass
instruments, which are too well known to require
description here. Like all other wares sold by these
eminent dealers, they are the best of their kind pro-
curable on the face of the globe.

VISITS TO AND FAVORABLE REPORTS

AND MASSACHUSETTS.
BRIGHT PROSPECTS.
VOSE & S0NS,170Tremont St.,Boston,Mass.
That portion of our country known as the New En-
land States has always maintained a glorious pre-emin-
ence in our national annals. From " Down East" have
come men of letters and statesmen equal in culture,
purity, and sagacity to any of ancient or modern times.
In the matters of trade, manufactures, and commerce,
also, these commonwealths have been and are at least
upon an equality with any more newly settled districts
of the United States.
A. B. CHASE GO'S
A recent rapid trip through New England has con-
vinced us that the music trade of that region is in a
very healthy condition. We are glad, moreover, to
report that New England manufacturers and dealers
speak very encouragingly of the outlook for the re-
mainder of the year.

IVORYTON, CONN.,
contains one of the largest piano and organ ivory key
factories in the country, viz.: that of
STYLE 14.
Mr. Post courteously conducted me over the factory
in Canal street, an edifice of three floors, each measuring
200 ft. x 80 ft. Here are manufactured drums, banjos,
guitars, mandolins and other small goods. At the start-
ing of their factory in the year 1885, seven men were
employed in it. The present factory force numbers
upwards of 150 men. What better proof of good work
and public approbation could be given?
Lyon & Healy ship musical goods to all parts of the
world. Large orders are constantly received by them
from Calcutta, Bombay, the great Australian cities, etc.,
and on the occasion of my visit they were just completing
the shipment of their celebrated London order of 1706
banjos. Superb decorative art-work is displayed in the
manufacture of many of this firm's instruments. 1 had
the pleasure of inspecting an elaborately gotten-up
guitar, embellished with inlaid pearl, which was being
finished for a private purchaser at a cost of $300.
Whether low-priced or high-priced, every instrument
bought of this reliable firm is constructed with the
greatest care, and finished in the most workmanlike and
enduring manner.

who have manufactured these goods for the trade for
many years, and whose ingenuity and superiority of
workmanship is everywhere recognized. No keys save
those of the highest attainable grade ever issue from
their works. Within a comparatively brief period this
firm have engaged in the manufacture of piano-forte
actions, and in this line, also, they are winning high
praise from a goodly number of our leading piano-
makers. Their present output of actions numbers in
the neighborhood of six hundred per month, and the
increasing demand has forced them to enlarge their
manufacturing capacity in this department. They will,
very speedly, be in a position to produce one thousand
actions each month. A short time ago the sending to a
certain piano manufacturer of a sample action resulted
in an order for fifty per month. One little fact like this
outweighs a ton of mere assertion.

also makers of ivory piano and organ keys, and whose
reputation for superiority in that line is fully equal to
that of their esteemed neighbors the Comstock, Cheney
& Co. The fact that Pratt, Read & Co. have continu-
ously pursued this business since the year 1808 should
be a sufficient guarantee of the excellence of their wares
and of their honorable mercantile standing. A little
while ago this time-honored house started a department
for the construction of organ reeds, reed boards and
couplers and, alter spending much time and money in
the perfection of these products, they are now ready to
fill all orders for them with unflagging promptitude.

shall bask in the light of Mr. Flanner's radiantly intelli-
gent countenance.
