HOW CHEAP AND POOR PIANOS ARE
WORKED OFF.
{Philadelphia Times.)
HESE pianos are made for the piano gyp trade
in Now York City. The piano gyps buy them
there for $120, and on account of going into
bankruptcy, the owner at the private residence will
sell one of these pianos for $175, or $200, or $225, or
as much more as the greeny will give for it. The
piano gyp pays the freight from New York and the
hauling from the depot. It costs about $10 to get a
gyp piano from the gyp factory in New York to the
gyp's place of business or private residence. The
gyp pianos are made out of green wood, and they
fall apart two or Hiree months after they are made.
They will stay in tune about two weeks if used. Any-
body that knows anything about a piano can tell a
gyp piano without any trouble A good piano is
made of well seasoned wood. The lumber in a good
piano is exposed to sun, rain, frost, and snow for
years before it is modeled into an instrument. Every
big piano factory that turns out only good pianos,
keeps a ten years' stock of lumber on hand. Lum-
ber Is seldom used that hasn't had five years' season-
ing. The gyp manufacturers use the commonest
kind of wire, and the poorest sorts of materials gen-
erally. A piano they sell for $120 costs them $75.
Some of the gyps deal only in second hand pianos.
They have them fixed up for $20 or $25, and a piano
they buy for $75 thoy sell for $200. Invariably some
woman has lost her husband, or her better half has
gone to the dogs, and she has been frightfully re-
duced in circumstances, so that she was obliged to
part with her piano for whatever price it would fetch.
T
OUT OF THE FRYING PAN INTO THE FIRE.
GAMON, O., June 24.
Tuesday last, Constable T. J. Wertsarrestedaman
named J. E. Shreve, of Millersburg, O., at Bucyrus,
for embezzling $77 from the Singer Manufacturing
Company, and brought him here, yesterday, before
Justice of the Peace Schumaker to answer the charge.
He waived examination, was required to give $500
and help him out. Mr. Compton came, but not as it
now appears to help Shreve out of the scrape, but to
prefer another and still more serious charge against
him. It appears that Shreve was, about a year ago,
bail, and failing to do so was to-day taken to the
county jail. After his arrest he telegraphed to a
Mr. J. A. Compton, of Coshocton, O., to come here
selling organs for Mr. Compton, and gave him forged
paper amounting to $400, and skipped. Since then
Compton did not hear of him again until he was
telegraphed for by Shreve, and came here expecting
to get his money from him. However, he did not,
and he will now prosecute him for forgery.—Cleve-
land Leader.
