A NEW MUSICAL
INSTRUMENT.
N a recent issue of the
London Times is des-
cribed a trial of a new
musical instrument in-
vented by Mr. Bailie
Hamilton. It resembles
in shape, and in the
means of p r o d u c i n g
sound, the harmonium
or organ. There is, how-
ever, one important dif-
ference. Mr. Hamilton
employs what is technic-
ally known as " f r e e
reeds," but instead of
acting upon them sing-
ly, he divides them into
groups of three connect-

ABOUT THE PIPE ORGAN.
" TS the pipe-organ an ancient invention?" a
JL reporter asked an organ builder.
"Oh, yes; in a crude form it existed before the
Christian era, and one of the coins of Nero had
on it a representation of an organ of that day.
In the early instruments, there were only eight or
ten keys, which were from three to five and a half
inches wide, and were manipulated by striking
them with the fist. From the manner of this
playing, the organists were then called organ-
beaters. The methods of furnishing the wind
were also very imperfect. A German church in
this city has an old-fashioned imported organ,
which is supplied with wind from an air-tank
with a tightly fitting lid, working up and down
with weights attached. It is pulled up each time
by a man who climbs a ladder, places his foot in a
stirrup and slides down.
