THE MUSICAL CRITIC AND TRADE REVIEW.
"W. Whitney. As the time for the festival was near at hand, it was deemed
best by the committee to form an association so that if the festival is a suc-
cess one can be given next year, and as often thereafter as advisable. Arti-
cles have been prepared incorporating the ' ' Music Festival Association for
the production, cultivation and advancement of instrumental and vocal
music," the members of the committee being the incorporators.
The large building in East Fourth street, which has been so long identi-
fied with the affairs of the Liederkranz Society, is announced for sale; and
the association will move up-town as early as its Board of Managers can m it convenient to do so. The migration up-town cannot, however, as Mr.
William Steinway, President of the association observed, take place within
the next two years, as it will require no less period than that to fix upon an
eligible situation and erect a suitable edifice. The Liederkranz has now 800
members and an idle capital of $100,000, which it is proposed to invest in a
permanent structure.
George F. Bristow's opera, ''Rip Van Winkle," with a new libretto by
J. W. Shannon, will, in all probability, be produced by the Boston Ideal
Opera Company next season. The mauuscript is already in the hands of the
managers.
The Apollo Club, of Brooklyn, gave a concert on the evening of Tues-
day, February 8, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The soloists of the
occasion were Maurice Dengremont, the young violinist, and Miss Emily
Winant.
The Litta concert troupe received precisely $53 from the recent concert
in Buffalo.
Miss Marie Bencheley gave a musical entertainment on Monday evening,
February 14, in the Brooklyn Art Association Rooms, and was assisted by a
number of local artists.
Mr. Frederic Clay, the composer, arrived from England in the White
Star steamer Germanic, on Sunday last.

Paloschi's " Almanacco Musicale " for the current year informs us that
since the invention of this kind of work in 1600, the number of operas pro-
duced has been 40,000, of which 11,000 were Italian.
Giacosa, the composer, has been promoted to the rank of Commander
of the Order of the Italian Crown.
Sarria, composer of " La Campana dell* Eremitaggio," has been created
Knight of the Crown of Italy.
The performance at the Grand Opera, Paris, organized for the benefit
of the Association of Dramatic Artists by M. Halanzier (M. Vaucorbeil's pre-
cursor as director), was a brilliant success, realizing no less than 33,000
francs for the Fund. The prominent feature of a highly varied and in every
way attractive programme was the ^appearance once more in public, for this
special occasion, of Mdme. Marietta Alboni, one of the greatest and most
accomplished artists that ever graced the lyric boards.
A pretty scene was witnessed at Edinburgh on Saturday, Jan. 8th. It
appears Mr. Riviere had been conducting promenade concerts in the
Waverley Market there during the week, but that the affair had been a fail-
ure. " Miserable audiences " had, it is stated, been the rule during the
werk, but on Saturday night, when the admission was reduced from a shil-
ling to sixpence, and "The British Army Quadrilles " were announced, an
audience of ten or twelve thousand people had assembled. Half the pro-
gramme had been gone through, when, just before the quadrilles began,
Mr. Riviere addressed the orchestra, and afterwards informed the audience
that he had paid sixty people out of his own pocket, that £75 was owing to
him, and that he woiild not play the quadrilles until that sum was paid.
There was, of course, considerable disturbance, groans were given for the
management, and one report states that some cushions were torn up and
furniture destroyed.
