Editorial
Hello again, and welcome to the fourteenth issue of the magazine. Many thanks for
the numerous letters and emails I've received in the last month - there were a couple
I had intended to publish this month, but once again it's been a challenge cramming
everything in. On the subject of emails, it would appear that some of my sent
messages have not reached their destinations, so if anyone was expecting a reply to
an email and didn't receive one, please don't think too badly of me! I probably did
reply, but apparently my internet provider (tiscali) has had problems with spammers.
These mindless wasters had infiltrated the tiscali system and caused it to send out
millions of erroneous emails, and in response, servers of other systems were simply
blocking all emails from tiscali users. So much for technology!
As the next issue of the magazine will be the last before the school summer
holidays, I intend to feature a few more places to visit. Some of you have promised
pictures of your attractions, so please let me have some in the next couple of weeks
in order that they can be included in the mag.
That's about it really - not much else to say! Other than the usual plea for help
with articles. I'm sure you must all be fed up with the stuff! write, and would love to
read something else from time to time - I know I would! So give it a go, you never
know how good an article could be until you've tried.
And finally, I generally try to ensure that the picture on the front of the magazine has
some relevance to what's inside. This time I've used one of the postcards from my
collection, as it reminded me of a 'know-it-all' who came into Mechanical Memories
at Brighton a few weeks ago. I have an old weighing machine at the museum, and
when asked by his son what it was, the know-it-all (who I believe was sober) replied
that it was a test your strength machine. He then proceeded to march his wife and
children around, giving erroneous explanations (in a loud, knowledgeable voice) for
all the other machines, ending with the Laughing Sailor. When asked how the sound
was produced, he replied "by bellows".
Oh, and he didn't spend any bloody money either.
All the best
Jerry
