,
We are indebted to Burtdn A. Burton of The Burton Co., Pasadena, Calif., for the above
pictures and well as for the pictures on the preceding page. Burton is one of the
nation's outstanding collectors of antique coin machines. Parts of his collection have
been shown in pa.st issues of "Marketplace". These pictures are part of the showing that
took place at the &lgewater Gulf Hotel in &lgewater Park, Miss. The year of the showing
can be judged by the Jennings Club Chief that seems to have been the outstanding feature
of this affair. If you recall the date and can name the people shown in these pictures,
let's bear from you.

'VOlUMf 41'
. It wa~ March, 1935,.when the "Price Lists" began to spread nationwide on a subscrip-
tion basis. That was right after the C.H.I. (Coin Ha.chine Industries,Inc.) convention
that year at the Sherman Hotel in Chicago. So many at the convention had acclaimed the
"Confidential Price Lists", as they were then called, and had, at the same time, asked
to receive every week's copy, that the very first subscription mailing was complete as
to nationwide coverage.
So many changes over the years in the "Price Lists". So much equipment that is no
longer listed. Like slot machines, consoles, pay tables, one-balls, bingos, reel type
coun~er game~, diggers, uprights, etc., etc. Also the fact that, just a few yea.rs ago,
vending ma.chines were removed due to the redicu lously low prices being quoted for the
used venders. These will a.gain appear once the vending field becomes more stabilized.
With the scarcity of used equipment so prominent thruout the entire industry, the
"Price Lists" of "Marketplace" have become ever more extremely important. That's be-
cause they list the last known quotation for used machines that haven't, in some cases,
been traded for months. And even though inactively traded machines a.re being constantly
removed, new equipment enters the lists to keep the action at top speed.
Most important is the fact the "Price Lists" of "Marketplace" have gained great
prestige and legal standing for "fair market value". The "Price Lists" are recognized
worldwide for all legal transactions ranging from sales and purchases to probate of
wills. The "Price Lists" of "Marketplace" definitely deserve this prestigious position
due · to their 41 yea.rs of active issue.
As used equipment became more scarce these past years, dealings in coin operated
ma.chines were totally based on the "Price Lists" of "Marketplace" which had won such
national acceptance over the years. Today, more and more operators worldwide, use the
"Price Lists" of "Marketplace" for their inventory reports as well as for their trade
deals toward the purchase of new machines.
It's been a long but most interesting road these past 41 years as the "Price Lists"
of ''Marketplace" changed and changed again to meet industry's changing conditions. Nor
can anyone ever foresee the "Price Lists" becoming stabilized. Who knows what conditions
may be tomorrow? Who knows what new type equipment may come into being? One thing does
remain certain - the "Price Lists" of "Marketplace" will continue to present quotations
for the next 41 years as they have these pa.st 41 years - remaining the one solid base
on which "fair market value" can remain assured.
