MARKETPLACE
PAG ~GUST 30, 1975

May surprise many to learn that letters from highschool, college, even grammar school
students, asking for full details, background, history, "etc., of pinball have tremendous-
ly increased this year. Students explain they have chosen "pinball" as the topic for
their school thesis. (Were there a "National Coin Machine Public Relations Bureau" in
existence, such an organization would be in best position to handle all requests and,
thereby, help create better image of the industry among these studious youngsters.)
Next issue, Sept.30 issue of "Marketplace", is "The Opener", the convention issue
that reaches the industry before all get ready to leave for the convention in Chicago.
This is the issue that lets everyone know what they can expect to see at the show. A
terrific issue for your advertising. Closing day for all advertising is September 10.
(Rush your ad today to: Marketplace, 185 N. Wabash Ave., Chicago, Ill. 60601.)
Hear from Robert E. Rosenberger of Chicago vho is quite a collector of old time mach-
ines that he would like to become a member of "American Coin Machine Collectors Society ...
In addition to some fine equip't he has already collected, he's seeking a "Mills Automatic
Dice" shown in "Marketplace" June 30,'75 "Pictorial History" edition. (The one man who con-
tinued buying these and could make them vork was Gordon B. Mills of Mills Sale Co.,Ltd.,
Oakland,Calif. He may be able to help you, Bob.)
"Marketplace" item to which you refer, N.Peldman, Chicago, was on portability. There
are many outstanding reasons why coinbiz is supreme in entertainment world. It's eas-
ily accessible to the public, extremely economical, fills a huge void for 'workingman's
club' where all can meet and, for a few coins, tremendously enjoy themselves. Keeps kids
off the streets. Helps retail business prosper. But greatest feature is fact coin mach-
ines are portable. When location closes or income falls, machines can be easily picked
up and moved to another location or, for that matter, to another town. How many busi-
nesses are there that can match coinbiz portability?
All the happy talky-talk you're hearing that the recession is, _at long last, al~ over,
kinda sounds like a lot of whistling in the dark. (What do you think?) ••• J. D. Kinlaw
of Fayetteville,N.C., who started as a route man for the late Joe Calcutt back in.'3~ and
who set up the first officers' club in Tokyo after War II, is now most thoroly enJoying
the operation he built up. J.D. has his two sons working with_ him. In the_mean~ime, he's
reactivating "Dollars for The Turtles" from which Crippled Childrens Hospital in Green-
ville,s.c. benefits. (Join "The Turtles" today!} ••• Nicest letter from Mrs. Dorothy M.
Christensen of Malta,Mont., telling us all about plans for MCMOA meet held at the Outlaw
Inn, Kalispell,Mont., July 25,26,27. Most pleasant people were there.
If you have
any "Pictorial History" editions of "Marketplace" you don't need, Mel Poster, 7389_Bush
Lake Rd..,Minneapolis,Minn., will be happy to take them off your hands •••• Barry_Peinb~att
of Universe Affiliated Int'l,Union,N.J., vrites us a.bout "Kid's Int'l Hall of Pinball •
(That's the first time we heard about it, Barry.)
Bally-Columbia Pictures tie-in on movie, "Tommy", vith Bally "Wizard", 4-player feat-
ured, reported to have captured interest of other movie and TV produc:r~. Ca~ expect to
see more such tie-ins in future. (Numbers of . people who see and play _wizard on lo~:
tions makes pinball terrific plugger for mo...-ies _and TV shows.) 7 •• Since;,e thanks
