COMMENT
To say times are hard in the amusement
machine industry is probably something of
an exaggeration. But they are certainly
harder than they were. The general reces-
sion has caught up with the industry, the
video boom has levelled out and now there
is talk of an extra tax on machines. A
number of smaller companies have had to
call in the receiver and others are on the
"critical list".
All this was reflected at the London Pre-
views where money was short and faces
long.
The prospect of an " ad valorem " tax on
amusement machines could not have
come at a worse time. Anyone who advo-
cates this blow beneath the belt can have
Leisure Play - November
no idea of the current state of the industry.
As BACTA General Secretary Alan Willis said,
it could be the differenece between
business showing a reasonable profit and
recording a resounding loss.
In the light of the current difficulties it is ·
heartening to see so many companies
taking a positive attitude and not scream-
ing " hurt".
A typical example of the positive
approach came from Ace Coin Equipment
who set out on a tour of the country with their
latest video awp and other equipment only
a fortnight after the London Previews. They
took their goods to the people who didn't
get to the Previews and their enterprise was
rewarded with substantial sales. This is
exactly the fire-in-the-belly spirit the industry
must adopt in these difficult times.
