COMMENT
This years ATE will be the biggest
ever staged. The Alexandra Palace fire
forced the change of venue. Suddenly
BACTA officials found themselves with
about 25 per cent more space to fill at
Olympia at considerably higher cost.
But in no time at all every
available square foot was snapped up.
It leaves one wondering just how
much space the industry could fill if it
was possible to stage the ATE in a
building where there was more room.
As it seems almost certain that the
National Exhibition Centre will be the
venue next year, we may find out.
It also underlines, once again, the
incredibly healthy record of this
industry during a period of economic

recession which has virtually crippled
many other industries.
Although it had not been finalised
at the time of going to press,
Birmingham seemed almost certain to
be the venue for the 1982 ATE. There
may be a few moans from those who
like to socialise in London but at least
the Exhibition Centre has the biggest
and most up to date exhibition
facilities in the country. And big is what
this industry is at the moment.
But before the trade gets too
involved in next year's preparations,
should forward a huge vote of thanks to
the men who literally salvaged this

Alexandra Palace. Alan Willis, Joe
Burnip, John Singleton and their helpers
achieved the nearest thing to a
miracle this trade will ever see.
