Dear Editor,
You advised me in May, 1980 that Lemons, Cherries and
Bell Fruit Gum by Richard Bueschel would 'hopefully' be
published last year.
Has it been published now?
Yours truly,
Richard A. Carlan
Dear Mr. Carlan,
Specializing in Antique Slot Machines
No, Lemon's, Cherries and Bell-Fruit-Gum has not yet been
published, but according to the author, Dick Bueschel, and the
publisher, Vestal Press in Vestal NY, it is still "in the works."
This is a major work of history, and we are all eagerly
awaiting its completion. The problem, as we see it, is that the
author is attempting to do a "perfect"job. We've commented on
this situation from time to time, and we know that the material
that will be in this book, including its hundreds of original
photographs, is something that we all want But all we can do is

Very truly yours,

Dear Editor,
I really enjoy The Coin Slot and it seems to be getting better
with every issue.
I have the following machine for your serial number list: 5 Jennings DUTCH BOY with automatic jackpot, serial number
76,523.
Please provide some information on how to spot a reproduc
tion, particularly, recast metal fronts and switched mechanisms.
Thank you,
Jac Scheideman
Dear Smilin' Jack,
Thanksfor theplug, and good question. Just how can you tell
a repro, and find out about a switched mech?
Let's start with your machine, the Jennings JACKPOT
"Primer" (meaning it has a back-up reserve jackpot to fill the
pot when aplayer hits and the visiblepot is dumped) commonly
called the "Dutch Boy, "5tplay, serial 76,523. That dates it at
late 1929 or early 1930. To our knowledge no one has yet recast
thisfront, suggesting thatyou havean original. Another clue to
an original is a serial number — which you have — die-
stamped into the metal Thefinal clue is appearance. With age
aluminum earns a patina, or dulled offcolor. Ifthe metal looks

flat and dull, it's probably original. Repros tend to look too

good.
As for switched mechs, that's tougher. But does it really
matter? The operators ofyore switched mechs all the time to
keep their machines running. So ifit's a switch from the 1930s
that's the way the machine ran and it's valid as an antique. The
only real way to tell is if both the cabinet and the mech have
serial numbers, and they're different The other way to tell is
obvious. Ifa mech doesn'tfit, or doesn't connect where it should
and is therefore inoperable chances are a switch was made, and
probably recently (i.e. within the last 15 years).
If you really want to know the insides and out of your
machine you'll want Coin Slot Guide No. 41 for the Jennings
OPERATOR BELL/AUTOMATIC COUNTER VENDER
which is in the works and scheduled for printing early in the
year. It shows all the parts and maintenence data you'll need.
Farther down the line Coin Slot Guide No. 149 is in the works
for the Jennings JACK-POT/JACKPOT, but that's a year or
Fred E. Sagebaum
Dear Fred,
Hey, thanks. Those are kind words for us. And thanks for
bringing us up to snuff on the coinage of the three serials you
provided a year ago. We're always glad to know. We had that
one of the Jennings SILVER CHIEF, and you'll find the
machine in An Illustrated Price Guide to the 100 Most
Collectible Slot Machines, Volume 3. But the other two were in
the updates, missing coinage. So now the story is complete.
