Congratulations. You did it You stumped us. No, we've
never seen anything like the MAKE TWENTY ONE counter
game before. So we checked with Dick Bueschel. He hasn't
either. We didn't check with Bill Whelan and we thought we'd

numbers are on the back. You and Dick Bueschel have done me
many favors in the past so I may as well contribute to your" Serial
Number Update." After all, I use the great update in the back of
"Volume 3" so often, not only to date my machines, but to give
to restoration clients with appraisals.

Since we had the law changed in Maryland many collectors
are going public. I have even started to retail slots, as well as
doing a great deal of repairs and restoration.
The new format of The Coin Slot is fantastic. I am working on
an article on methods of legalizing the collecting of antique slots

Dear Editor,
Dick Bueschel's Serial Number Update in your March, 1982

MELON BELL. He suggests that the prefix " Y' could possibly
mean skill.
I have a 5* Mills MELON BELL, serial number V432,894
and it does not have skill controls. It was distributed by, as
stamped inside, The Vending Machine Company of Fayetteville,
North Carolina. It also utilizes the STANDARD CHERRY or
BROWN FRONT cover design with MELON JACKPOT and
not the modified design pictured on page 183 and 193 of
Collector's Treasury ofAntique Slot Machines by Peter Bach.
One other note is that it appears no one reproduces reel strips or
award cards for the MELON BELL, as I had to patch the
melons on a set of Gold Award strips.
Charlie Claghorn
P.S. I have enclosed a picture of the MELON BELL described
above. The color scheme may not be the original as I completely
restored this machine. It did have 99% original parts when
purchased.
Dear Charlie,
Now, that's teamwork. And you mayjust have solved a real
identification problem We checked with Dick Bueschel, and
his answer was "I'll bet that's it!"
Whatzit? The Vending Machine Company of Fayetteville,
NC It's knownfor afact that Vemco (their company namefor
short, and the one theyput on their special order machines) did
a lot of "Special Order" work with Mills Novelty Company,
andgot machines no one else got Could it be that the " V" before
a Mills serial number standsfor " Vemco," and the machines so
marked are actually private label jobs by Mills for The

Vending Machine Company? They all seem to be a bit different
than the mold So maybe that is it, and thanksfor the note and
the picture. Mystery may be solved
Sincerely,
Editor
