Coin Slot Magazine - #083 - 1982 - January [International Arcade Museum]
to the
editor
Dear Editor,
In the May '81 issue you answered my letter and asked for
some serial numbers. Here they are, but some questions also. I
just got a Mills BROWN FRONT 5* 439,144. There is a key
hole on the front but it doesn't serve any purpose. If you put any
2*191*
coins in, they just fall inside. Also the award card says "Melon
Top Award". If you hit the three melons nothing happens. A
photo in Jerry Ayliffe's book on page 72 shows an extra jackpot
window in a Cherry Bell. As you can see my "Bursting Cherry"
center piece is missing. To load the jackpot I must remove the
mechanism and drop the coins one or two at a time. It is not self
loading. What do I have?
Enclosed find a tax paper on coin operated machines from
1942 which you may want to print. I had, but sold, a Mills Token
Bell 5C 591,586. It is the same as my 25C machine,
brass token instead of coins when you hit the jackpot. I also sold
a Mills 5 C "Poinsettia" 266,090 with a free play when you hit a
lemon.
I look forward each month for your magazine as it contains
a wealth of information and good articles. Keep up the good
work.
Cecil E. Rhoads

First of all, thank you for that interesting Internal Revenue
memofrom November 2nd, 1942. Original material like that is
very hard to come by. A lot of us have read about the wartime
tax on coin machines. And here's the whole storyfor slots, pins,
vending machines and everything.
