Database management Sounds
like some kind of black magic
that only a computernik or a
conehead could understand. It's
really not that incomprehensible.
Again, let's look at an application
instead of the program itself. We
want to create a mailing list sort it
by zip code, and print gummed labels
for mailouts. Using the database
program, we tell the computer that
the fields of data we wish to mani

City, State, and Zip Code. Now that
the computer knows what kind of in
formation will be used, the actual
data can be put in the computer. In
this part of the program, the compu
ter displays a template similar to a
form that you would see in a file
cabinet. Each field is labelled and

After the form is filled out, the
data is stored on disk in a "record"
located in the "file." The file might
eventually contain 1,000 such "rec
ords" These records can be searched
according to certain use-specified
criteria (e.g. Zip Code > 50000 and
Zip Code > 60000 or Name="John
Smith"). When the computer locates
the desired record it is displayed on
the screen for viewing and possible
editing. Generally a mailing list is
sorted by zip code so that when the
labels are generated, the cheaper
mailing rate can be used. Once the
records are in the file, they can be
sorted alphabetically or numerically
by any field. Lef s look at one more
database application. A retail store
generates an invoice for each sale.
Each invoice has data on it that we
would like to have in our database.
The fields we might set up to keep
in our records in our file might be:
location name, game name, date,
meter reading, collection amount
and over/short. At the end of each
month a report could be generated
on each machine and/or location.

Have A Party
for
Promotion
If you want people to come to
your location, try having a special
party. Parties are fun. Everyone
loves an excuse to socialize with
old friends and meet new ones.
Give them the excuse.
What kind of party?
The party should celebrate some
happening that is of interest to your
customers and potential customers.
A sports event, a local celebrity, a
new organization starting, a political
cause... whatever the occasion, it
should be positive.
Plan a party
Set the date and time for the
party. Be sure it doesn't conflict
with other events. Schedule and
setup special things to have and do
at the party. Game contests* refresh
ments* other entertainment, dancing,
favors, decorations . . include all
the extras to make a festive atmos
phere. Give incentives for people to
come—fun times, a chance to win,
celebrities etc
Invite the guests
Send out invitations in newspapers
or local newsletters Contact all the
news media to announce the party
as a FREE EVENT for the public.
(You can give it an extra boost by
adding a good cause fund raising
alternative.) Publicize as much as
possible. The better the word gets
the crowds Be sure everyone has a
good time.
Extend the advantage
Everyone who attends your party
is a good potential future customer.
This is a good chance to develop
the mailing list for future promotions
Have a sign up or possibly a drawing
for prizes to get the list Give each
person a coupon for free plays the
next week or month.
People remember
A good party
Throw a good party and everyone
will
remember they had a good
time. They will come back again
too!
Some ideas to make
Your party better:
Get a popular radio station involved.
Offer free "gifts" to anyone who
attends
Target your party to a specific
segment of your customer market
Encourage participation in events
