Dear Eugene,
Caillel You 'veprobably stumbled across a heritage that you
will find overwhelming, and marvelous. To date it is literally
unwritten American history. But, now, I'm writing it
The name is Alsatian. Joseph started out in Detroit, movedto
Owasso, Michigan, raised two boys (Adolph and Art) and two
girls, moved to Saginaw and opened up a manufacturing
business (did you ever see those "cash carriers'* in old J.C.
Penney stores), went into a new technology around 1893 with
slot machines, took the new business (under a variety ofnames,

and partners) back to Detroit in 1897, and became the second
largest firm in the business. It's said, in Detroit, that the

toolmakers and workers. They were at Caille Bros. Co., and
Adolph remained a close and dearfriend to Henry Ford until
death.
Sources are the Detroit Museum, the Burton Room at the
Detroit Public Library, and inch-by-inch research. I've done

machines with a major chapter on Caille.
The most that has appeared in print to date is in my three
volume series of "100 Most Collectible Slot Machines." You
may enjoy the books.
P.S. Remember —
Pennsylvania is a legal state
to sell your slot machines.
Also, to see what they made, here's a sheet I reprinted that
shows some of the Caille machines of the 1904 period
Do you have anyfamily stories? Or oldfamily photographs
that I could copy? You should know that you probably have
relatives in the Detroit area (check the Detroit suburban
directories) although they know little ofpast glories.
The Caille Bros. Company is a significant story in American

Sincerely,
Dear Editor,
I am writing to you in hopes that you can provide information
pertaining to a trade stimulator. I have written to several
individuals that are involved in this hobby, however, none have
answered my letters.
The information that is needed is in regard to a 1C, 3 reel trade
stimulator. This machine is shaped like a beer barrel and the
spigot is the trip for the reels. The machine bears no name or
other identification and appears to be missing a base as well as
reel strips. Information that is needed is as follows:
1. Name of manufacturer.
2. Date of manufacture.
3. Type of reel strips used.
4. Estimated value of machine as is.
Player piano replacement stacks for all players.
