I find it interesting that the letters ASL on the sticker are
followed by periods — are they someone's initials? Perhaps a
review of a 1935 Dayton telephone directory would give us
further clues. Maybe we're talking about the same ASL.
A check of another machine (Spirit of America, 1934 vintage)
seems to indicate that A.S.L. Sales was only a marketing (as
opposed to manufacturing) firm. There is a small metal plate

Dear Collector,
Interesting comments.
Interesting machines.
Interesting
history.
You're absolutely right. The TOTEM does look like the
TARGET. In fact, they are practically the same game. Ifyou
saw Dick Bueschel's beginning article on his pinball books in
our May issue you saw an ad for the Beverator TARGET.
Beverator made the game in January, 1935. The, as so often
happens in the coin machine business, they sold out the game to
the Pierce Tool Company in Chicago. Pierce made the same
game with a new name, and introduced the TOTEM in June,
1935. So that fits perfectly with your battery dates.
As for the BILLIARD FLASH, (the actual name of that
"Spirit ofAmerica" game) that's another interesting game. It

was made by the Shyvers Coin Company in Seatle, Washington
in January, 1934. In fact, the BILLIARD FLASH was shown
in The Coin Slot once before when it was the cover illustration
for the July, 1977, issue. It was one of the pinball games then
being offered in the 1977 Roy Arrington Auction. BILLIARD
FLASH was one ofsix or seven games made by Shyvers in the
"Spirit ofAmerica" line, and was so successful, Shyvers . . .
well, that'spart ofthe story that will appear in the An Illustrated
Price Guide to 100 Most Collectible Pinball Games series of
books now being written by Dick Bueschel. As it looks now, we
hope to have thefirst volume before the end ofthe year, with the
others soon to follow.
AsforA.S.L. Sales, it was a distributorfor the Ohio market.
Distributors often asked to have their names put on machines
when they had large orders. We don't know what the initials
mean.
Sincerely,
Editor
