Ocean Park Pier (formerly Lick Pier?) was renovated
in the mid 1950's and renamed Pacific Ocean Park
(POP). This amusement park operated from 1958 to
1967. In its latter years, it couldn't compete against
theme parks such as Disneyland POP Pier burnt down
in 1974 and is now just a memory.
The only piers left in this area today are the Santa
Monica Pier (formerly Looff s Pier) and the adjacent
Newcomb Pier in Santa Monica, and Venice Pier in
Venice. Alt are in less than good shape due to old age.
The only remaining amusements are on the Santa
Monica Pier - a carousel (recently renovated), some
concessions, Playland Arcade, and bumper car ride.
(Note: this pier is featured on the opening and closing
credits of the "Three's Company" TV show.) Newcomb
Pier is now used as a parking lot (that part which isn't
condemned or in ruins). It used to have a big roller
This souvenir medal was issued to commemorate the
building of the breakwater off Santa Monica Pier in
1933. The other side advertises Ocean Park and pic

background.

coaster back in the 1920's. Venice Pier is now for
fishing only.
Playland Arcade on Santa Monica Pier features
electronic arcade games, pinball machines, skee ball,
air hockey, amid miscellaneous arcade machines,
some of which are true antiques still in active use.
Bingo was extremely popular in Venice and Ocean
Park from the 1920's to 1949, when it was outlawed.
Many bingo parlors sprung up on the piers, on Ocean
Front Walk, and on the gambling ships anchored
offshore. Many versions of bingo were played. In
addition to normal bingo, there were mechanical pin-
ball competitive bingo, darts thrown to select numbers,
balls tossed to get five in a row, etc. The bingo games
went under such names as Bridgo, Tango, Hearts, and
Fascination.
Hollywood celebrities frequented these bingo parlors
which were reeling in a million dollars a month. The
winners of games generally won from $5.00 to $10.00,
usually paid in tokens or coupons.
A famous graduate of the bingo parlors of Venice
was William Harrah, founder of Harrah's casino hotels
in Reno and Lake Tahoe. In the early 1930's he
dropped out of UCLA and went to work in his father's
bingo parlor in Venice, (his father was once the mayor
of Venice). In the late 1930's he moved to Reno and
opened a bingo parlor there, which flopped. But his
luck changed when he began a gambling casino there
in 1946, and one in Lake Tahoe in 1955, and quickly
became a multimillionaire.
While in Venice in the 1930's, Harrah issued aluminum
tokens reading "Harrah's Amusements, Free Play" and
"Harrah's Vogue, Free Play". Both are very rare and
desirable today.
