a marvelous one on "Rare and Early Gambling Antiquities'9 —
from Robert A. Doyle of East Coast Casino Antiques, 98 Main
Street, Fishkill NY, 12524 that identifies Bob as a member
appraiser. You might try him. Incidentally, professional ap
praisers generally work on a fee of 3% to 5% of the appraised
evaluation, or for a set negotiated fee, so that gives you an idea
of what that might cost.
The second method is being accepted by most insurance
companies. In fact, we haven 7 found one yet that has rejected
the system. That's Do-It- Yourself, but with help. Ifyoufollow a
standard form or procedure and identify your machines, date,
description, etc. they'll take it. The documentation is supported
by xeroxed pages from any of the current "An Illustrated Price
Guide to the 100 Most Collectible Slot Machines" or "Trade
Stimulators", with three volumes of slots now available (the
third in about 8 weeks!) and two volumes oftrade stimulators on
the stands.
Now here's a way to do it — get "An Illustrated Price Guide to
the WO Most Collectible Trade Stimulators Volume2"just now
out. It has a complete editorial section of how to do your own
appraisals, and has afull set of the accepted standardforms and
some sample applications. It'll do the trick fast, inexpensively,
and effectively.
The Editor.
Dear Beverly;
Thanks for the picture as we suggested, and that did it. Your
machine is the Mills HAND LOAD "Black Front", serial
465,691 which means it was produced in 1940. It's the same as
the MYSTERY and BLUE FRONT as covered in Coin Slot
Guide No. 15 (which will cover the mechanism) exceptfor that
large single hand loaded jackpot on the front.
Dear Editor,
I have enclosed a picture for your identification. This Mills
machine is serial # 465,691. What is our slot machine?
Thanks Again,
Beverly Wright
A future Coin Slot Guide No. 184 is in the works for the
HANDLOAD and FUTURE PLA Y models, but that'll be a
year or two in coming. The mechanisms are the same as covered

Letters to the Editor continued

Nice machine, and it looks to be in great shape.

Editor
Gentlemen,
Please direct this letter to someone that can help me to
determine the age of my antique machine and its approximate
value per the enclosed four snapshots. I have thoroughly
inspected this machine inside and out and cannot find any type
of markings. I recently purchased your book "An Illustrated
Price Guide to the 100 Most Collectible Slot Machines" and
cannot find this unit shown.
Any help you can offer will be very much appreciated.
Respectfully,
John Petrovich
P.S. This is a good working machine and I would rate it in the
fair to good catagory.
Dear John;
Your machine is a "flat glass" Mills OPERATOR BELL
"Owl", but it's hard to say if it's the 1923, 1924, or 1925

OPERATOR BELL. Only the serial number can tell us that.
Ifyou look closely you may be able to find the serial number.
It's die stamped in the wood to the right of the coin chute and
just above the playing handle at rest. Ifit's below 90,000 it's the
1923; if it's above 120,000 it's the 1925. If it's in the middle it's
probably the 1924.
Sorry you couldn'tfind this machine in "100 Most Collectible
. . ."volumes. It'll be in volume 3 ofthe slot machine series. You
might also like to know that Coin Slot Guide No. 24 isfor this
machine and describes it, dates it and shows the mechanism and
how to maintain it. You can get it from Coin Slot Books for
$7.45 postpaid.
Based on the manuscript for volume 3 coming up, the Mills
1923 (through 1925) OPERATOR BELL is from "Fair" to
"Good" condition is rated at from $700 to $1,100.
