Dear Mike;
I really appreciate your offer of assistance in obtaining legislative action to legalize antique
slot machines for collecting purposes. I've discussed this with many collectors who, such as
I, are interested in mechanical devices such as used in early arcades, fairgounds, etc., and
there is a real interest in this state.
In the last three or four years, since California passed the first amendment to its slot ma
chine law, permitting the collecting of these devices, the movement has spread like wildfire
across the country with at least twelve states taking similar action and at least four more
with pending action (New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Illinois). Several other
states, perhaps as many as six or eight, have no real prohibitions for bonafide collectors.
To attest to the popularity of slot machine collecting, there are now two national month
ly publications devoted primarily to slots, there are two price reference guides; and there
are dozens of references which generally are reprints of early catalogs, etc., many of which
are available through the Vestal Press.
The above information may be useful in discussing with legislators the filing of a bill
to amend the Mass. Law.
Fve enclosed four copies of a proposed amendment plus other related information.
Should you need more, I'll be happy to provide same.
The proposed amendment essentially takes the best from those bills filed in other
states. I believe it is clear and unambiguous and should not hamper law enforcement with
respect to illegal gambling.
Please keep me advised, and let me know what else may be required.
Again, thanks very much in offering to assist.
