THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY . . . How many times has it hap
pened to you? Practically every collector has at least one sad tale
of woe to share with his fellow collectors. I am sure you are familiar
with the general theme . .. "Some dumb !*?!* had one or more rare
and desirable slot machine, jukebox, pinball, etc. and sold it only
five minutes ago for $5.00. Or he hauled it off to the dump just last
week! Too bad you weren't here sooner!" The variations on these
hard luck stories are endless.
Just recently we heard of a fellow collector who contacted an
old farmer who said he had sixty old slot machines he would be
willing to sell cheap. Imagine the collector's excitement upon hering
this.! Well, after driving hundreds of miles non-stop our friend arrived
at the farm. Sure enough, the farmer still had the machines. Only
one slight problem . . . seems the farmer had become frightened
way back when of getting caught with the slots, so he hid them. No
thing unusual about that. But here's the clincher!
Mr. Joe Farmer had buried all sixty slots in potato sacks over
twenty-five years ago. Need I bother telling you about what kind of
deterioration can occur in that timespan, with only potato sacks
protecting the slot machines from Mother Nature's destructive power.
Guess who won the battle?
Right, chalk up another victory for
Mother Nature!
After unearthing a few of the slot machines, our friend the collec
tor quickly realized the hopelessness of the situation. Virtually all
the various parts and pieces of every machine was too far gone to be
of any value, to anyone. Another wild goose chase!
How about some of you? Do you have a favorite "Tough Luck
Charlie" story of your own you would like to share with your fellow
collectors? If you do why not send in your tale to the Coin Slot
and we'll print it in a "Letters to the Editor" column sometime in
the near future. Details as to specific dates, places, your name, and
address can be left out if you wish. So drop us a line today and tell
us about your favorite tale.
