Coin Slot

Issue: 1976 August 019

Coin Slot Magazine - #019 - 1976 - August [International Arcade Museum]
The five Caille single uprights sold for prices ranging from $3600 to
$3900. Although complete and working perfectly, it was noticed that
some of the machines had the wrong nameplates on them (e.g. Lot #343
was a Centaur with an Eclipse nameplate). The first double up for sale
(Lot #344) was a Caille mixed double, Centaur and Eclipse. However, the
machine had two Centaur nameplates. This first double in lovely con
dition sold for $10,500. The last lot of the auction, Lot #537, was a
properly labelled Caille Double Centaur which sold for $11,250. This
ended Harrah's second Pony Express Auction.
It was the consensus of the collectors present, that, while the auction
was certainly pleasant enough to "endure", (especially with Don Britt
doing his routinely masterful job of auctioneering), the most fun was
actually the meeting with other collectors to discuss collections and ma
chines wanted and available. More machines probably traded hands away
from the auction than at it. A good time was had by all and preliminary
preparations were already being made by many for Roy Arrington's next
auction, tentatively scheduled for this coming October in Las Vegas.
Marshall Fey and his brother, Franklin/own and oper
ate the Liberty Belle Saloon in Reno. The Feys are
grandsons of Charles Fey, the acknowledged father of
the 3-reel slot machine. Over the years, a trek to the
Liberty Belle has become a "must" for collectors when
ever they are in or near Reno. The original Fey "Liberty Bell" slot ma
chine is on display as are Marshall Fey's fine collection of other old and
rare machines. The fact that the Liberty Belle offers tasty barbecued ribs
and frosty pitchers of good beer is just an extra added attraction.
