• The fact that so many sources continue to make optimistic
reports about business conditions is something to emphasize at
the present time. Let's hope that every operator in the land
can see some benefits from a high business level and that the
Coin M achine Industry will generally profit from a better
economic picture. Optimism itself pays off in dollars and cents.
• True, some of the optimistic reports are inspired by politics
and there are some situations that are definitely adverse. But
the boom in the building and auto industries seems real enough
to inspire the country as a whole.
• Sorry that our date of issue coincides ~lmost with the week
of holding the ACMMA Convention in Chicago, and hence it
was not possible to publish reports on the convention in this
issue. Much interest centers in the general feeling among oper-
ators as shown at national conventions, coming as they do from
all parts of the country. Conventions are a kind of mirror that
show the attitude and spirit that exists 1Ill10ng operators over
the country. The CMI convention in June will add still more to
the story of what operators are thinking about business.
• Up to the present, newspapers seem to have avoided being
too sensational about the anti-crime drive by the federal govern-
ment, the investigations by Congress, the Johnson bill, and the
inclusion of gaming devices in the situation. Collier's showed
that sensation could be developed, and if Congress continues
to stir the subject some newspapers · are bound to take the sen-
sational side of it. But the sensationalism seems to have been
lacking thus far. By the time this issue reaches our readers, the
picture might change.
• Many industries besides the coin machine trade are wonder-
ing what the entire summer will be like, for there are many other
lines of business than the coin machine trade that depend much
on the ~eather. Last summer brought some unusual heat and
the soft drink business, among others, profited {mmensely from
