Bonanza's Two Machines Built
For Quality At a Fair Price
LOS ANGELES-By offering a high
grade pop corn vendor at a reasonable
price, Bonanza, Inc., will help operators to
make better money, so says Elwood Lor·
man of the firm. The same price policy
is also being carried out in offering a shoe
shiner to the trade, he added.
The newly organized firm introduced its
two machines at the 1949 Coin Machine
Show and reported an unusual reception.
. One national distributor of such machines
is said to have expressed amazement that
machines of such quality could be offered
at the price, Lorman said. The firm reo
ceived orders which called for getting pro·
duction into full swing.
The firm is able to offer the pop corn
vendor at an attractive price, Lormer said,
because the machine has been simplified
in every possible way. Operators of long
experience in the field were consulted as to
what they really want in a machine, and
then the firm built its vendor in compliance
with the many suggestions received.
The Bonanza Nugget vendor has a special
heating unit to keep pop corn at the right
temperature ; it also has ample storage
capacity in the base of the cabinet, if de·
sired. All parts are easily accessible and
opera tors have especially praised the place-
ment of the locked-in coin box, which per-
mits easy access to other mechanisms.
The cold·rol.led steel cabinet is offered
for its durability and visibility is also pro-
vided, yet the merchandise · is fully pro-
tected by the design of the cabinet top.
The Swi/ty-Shiner has also been simpli-
fied in every way possible and much study
put into getting the right kind of wax.
The pri ce is also said to permit operators
a chance to make money.
A utomatic Games Expand
Into Vending Field
.LOS ANGELES-Automatic Games Co.,
largest West Coast distributor of used bell
machines, has expended its sales and serv-
ice facilities into the used cigarette and
candy machine field.
' ''After consulting countless operators,"
said Dannie Jackson, partner in the firm,
"we found out there was a definite need in
this territory for good reconditioned c~ndy
and cigarette machines. Operators requir-
ing equipment for locations which could

not support new machines wanted good
used ones. Then, too, some operators were
not in a financial position to purchase all
new equipment.
"With years of experience in recondi-
tioning used equipment, and with extensive
shop facilities manned by top personnel,
we decided to fulfill the operator's needs."
Sammie Donin, Jackson's partner, added
that Automatic Games Co. is carrying a
good stock of leading makes and mod!lls
of cigarette and candy vendors, which are
in top mechanical condition and ready for
location.
Popularity 01 " Star" Ball
Gum Continues to Grow
OAKLAND-When manufacturers of the
West come up for discussion, U. S. Chew-
ing Gum Mfg. Co. occupies a stand-out
roll. This firm, under the guiding hand of
L. H. Strickler, has in a short few years
built a national reputation as manufacturer
of some of the nation's finest ball gum for
vending machines.
"Quality First" has been the watchword
of Strickler, who has had years of experi-
ence in every branch of the chewing gum
industry.
Strickler equipped his modern Oakland
plant with the latest type machinery to
produce a triple· rolled ball of gum, out:
standing for roundness, uniform size and
resistance to cracking from heat or cold.
When ball gum vendors reported de-
' crease in sale of bubble ball gum, Strickler
undertook a survey of the field and dis-
covered the trend was definitely toward
regular ball gum. So he started manufac-
turing Star regular ball gum having the
same base and flavoring as nationally ad-
vertised brands of stick gum and at the
same time began a one-man campaign to
get operators to make the change in their
machines.
"Those who made the change," he re-
ported, "have told me that sales in many
cases have doubled."
Industry Output-1947
WASHINGTON - The long-awaited re-
port on production of coin machines in
1947, as officially tabulated in the Census
of Manufacturers by the Census Bureau,
is at last available. The total dollar value
of products by the coin·operated machine
trade in 1947 was estimated at $56,900,000.
The last previous official census made
was in 1939 and the total value of coin
machine production in that year was esti-
mated at approximately $17,000,000. A
previous census of manufacturers had been
made in 1937 and total coin machine pro-
duction had declined slightly from 1937 to
1939.
Those who desire an official release on
the census should ask for Manufacture of
Coin Operated Machines, 1947; Report No.
