tories.
Exports have been under a handicap
since the war, and yet the official figures
stack up pretty well for 1947. Tbe total
exports for th at year were 26,542 machines,
estimated to have a value of $5,120,000.
Thus, export trade was equal to nearly 10
per cent of the total value of manufac-
tured machines that year.
For comparison, the Census Bureau gives
the following tabulation of data on coin
machine manufactures in 1947 and 1939:

Bureau Comment
WASHI GTON-The official comment in
the Census Bureau release on coin machine
out put in 1947 read as follows:
"Manufacturers in the Coin-operated Ma-
chines Industry shipped products valued
at $56.9 million d uring 1947; according to
preliminary figures released hy the Bureau
of the Census, Dept. of Commerce. This
represents an increase of 235 per cent over
the $17.0 million value of products re-
ported by this industry in 1939, when the
last Census of Manufactures was taken.
Value added by manufacture in the industry
during 1947 amounted to $28.6 million, an
increase of 245 per cent over tbe $&3
million value added in 1939. Value added
by manufacture is calculated hy suhtracting
cost of materials, supplies, containers, fuel,
purchased electric energy, and eontract
work from the value of products_ For some
purposes, part icularly for comparing one
industry or group of industries with another,
it is the most satisfactory Census measure
of the economic importance of an industry.
"This industry does not include establish-
ments primarily engaged in producing coin-
operated phonographs, scales and balances.
refrigerated beverage dispensers, refriger.
ated ice cream dispensers, and photographic
apparatus.
"The average number of production
workers in the industry amounted to 4,438
in 1947 as compared with 2,748 in 1939.
Wages paid to tbese employees increased
241 per cent, from $3.2 million in 1939 to
$10.9 million in 1947. Twenty.nine of the
73 establishments classified in this industry
are located in the State of Illinois. These
29 establishments accounted for over 80
per cent of the total value of shipments by
this industry during 1947.
"These sta tistics are derived from a pre-
Jiminary tabulation of manufacturers' re-
ports in the 1947 Census of Manufactures.
Final and more detailed figures will appear
in the Census publication, Office and Store
Machines, which will be published and
offered for sale by the Superintendent of
I?o~uments in the near future. Similar pre-
hmmary and final releases will be i sued
for other manufacturing industries during
the next few months. Totals for the United
States and for each of the States will be
issued in April. These will be followed by
detailed statistics for States, metropolitan
areas, counties, and cities."
Battle Over Excise Taxes
Gets To Be Partisan Issue
Why risk
to save
DOLLARS
PENNIES?
Why risk your coin box dollars just to save pennies on ordinary locks?
Chicago ACE l ocks a re actually less expensive- because the coin box
raids they can prevent, more than offset thei r slight additional cost.
The ACE 7 pin-tumbler mechanism may be keyed to over 80,000
changes. That means security! The ACE round keyway is designed to
prevent the insertion of tools into the lock. That means security! Key
blanks for the ACE lock are never sold to anyone. That means security!
Changes for your private use are registered in your name so that only
you can get duplicate keys from the factory . That means security!
Add 'em up and you' ll see why it's wise not to risk dollars just to save
pennies on you r equipment locks. So next time you order, be sure to get
Chicago ACE locks. Sizes and styles to fit practically all machines. Mean-
time, write for Folder MR. No obligation.
WA HINGTON-The issue of repealing
federal excise taxes began to develop into
a real political battle by early March.
House Republican leaders openly cham-
pioned the idea of repealing many of the
~xci e taxe_ .. Democratic leaders were put
m the pOSitIOn of oppo ing the repeal of
most 0 f these excises.
President Truman was reported to be
opposed to removing most of the excises
unless some new sources of revenue could
be found to replace the taxes repealed.
Since the excise tax i sue is becoming
JargeJy a partisan ba ttle, it is difficult to
make any predictions as to what might he
the outcome. In publisbed reports on the
suggested repeals, mention was made of the
excise fee on bowling alleys, but removal
of the federal tax on coin machines . has
not appeared in the public reports.
