feet will show up in tim e_ The European
aid program is bolstering prices but it has
not yet produced any wild price increases
as some had predicted.
A digest of current reports on various
ingredients follows:
Butler - Output was recently running
about 20 per cent below the 5-year average
for the tim e of year. During May there was
an increase in output but by June 1 this
was tapering off. Wholesale and retail chan-
nels seem to have ample supplies. Early
in June retail butter prices were about five
cents above the low for th e year and 15
cen ts below the hi ghest price for the year;
price trend is upward.
Caffeine-Soft drink trade reported to
be making active purchases and prices hold
steady.
Chocolate- Recently, cocoa bean prices
advanced 20 per cent in two weeks; ware-
hou e stocks are very low. Spot market h as
been active recently and manufacturers
have begun to buy in quantity; manufac-
turers had hesitated in th e markets for some
time, awai tin g price reductions. Crop re-
ports from Brazil and West Africa show
short supp li es for the coming months. Candy
trade has hoped for many months for lo wer
price on chocolate coa tin gs, and some sli ght
reductions were made, but th e general out-
look is not so favorable. Hershey Chocolate
Corp. recently raised the wagcs of its em-
ployees on a plan sim il ar to that of General
Motors.

The candy trade will cont inue to work
for lower prices on chocola te, but as poin ted
out in this column frequently, real hope for
permanent relief on cho colate supply and
prices depends on developing cocoa bean
orchards in Mexico and Puerto Rico.
Cocoanut- Recent trade reports suggest
improvement in production of dessicated
cocoanut in the Philippines, with the pros·
pect of normal conditions by about July l.
Demand from manufacturers in the U. S.
is still said to exceed present supply; prices
in the Islands have recently been reported
