CLEAR WINDOWS
(Continued from Page 108)
paint over his windows. He knows that when
you attempt secrecy, people will get the
wrong impression. Of course, he keeps his
machines clean and uses no improvised lao
bels but neatly printed ones. His service
calls are all handled within an hour after
they are phoned in because he realizes that
out·of·order machines lead to robbery and
vandalism and incur ill will of both cus·
tomer and location owner.
"Bill accompanies his service men to loca·
tions from time to tim e and by so doing
Ratters th e owner, who is happy to receive a
visit from the 'big boss.' If h e runs into a
tou gh location, he drops in for a drink or a
meal and tries to win over the proprietor.
"He knows that his business is judged by
his personnel; that's why service men are
always polite and pleasant and their garb
is immaculate.
"He keeps a careful check on service
men's receipts-gets rid of dishonest em·
ployees promptly.
"When a location wants to have a rna·
,chine removed, Bill can re·sell him on serv-
ice; Jack can only plead for another
chance.
"The luxurious war days are over," Greene
concluded, "Those days made us compla-
cen t ; we took a lot for granted. Now is th e
time to take stock and readjust our way of
rloing business."

on a set of trade practice rules whid. had
recently been se nt to members of the trade.
Chewing gum wholesalers and all members
Silver-King Corp. has olved two major
of th e industry had been invited to the con-
ference. Th e National Candy Wholesalers
Assn. had led in framing the proposed trade
practice rules.
Proposed rules will cover misrepresenta-
tion, " free" offers, misuse of trade-marks,
breach of contract, sellin g below cost, false
price quotations, and other well-known
trade practice rules.
Following the conference, a new form of
the rul es will be made, based on sugges-
tions at the conference. The new form will

Automatic Enterprises Now
Delivering New Bar Vendor
LOS ANGELES-Automatic Enterprises,
national sales agents for Star Venders, In c.,
who manufacture the new Star sin gle co l-
umn bar vendor, report initial sales of ovel
2,000 in the Los Angeles area alone sin ce
delivery started in August.
Operators report complete satisfactioll
with th e performance of the machine, whicl.
has been on location for over six weeks.
One of the outstanding features of til('
Slar vendor is the unique method used ill
installation . Small mounting brackets are
attached by the use of plastics to any build-
ing material-wood, tile, cement, steel or
glass. The plastic is allowed to set for 24
hours and then the machine is mounted til
th e brackets. Brackets may be removed al
nny tim e by ,,,e of a solvent without mar-
ring the ",,·fact> to which th~y were at-
tached.
New Low-Priced Hot Nut
Vendor by Silver-King
CHICAGO-According to H. F. Burt,
hottleneck~ in marketing hot nut machines:
the high price of the machine and lack of
a satisfactory heating unit.
"Price has not only been greatly reo
duced," Hurt said, "hut our machine is
~quipped with a new type low-voltage plate
heater which warms the nuts to a crisp
goodness_ A sma ll bulb set in the red glass
attracts the attention of the customers."
Dispensing portions are adjustable for
various types of nuts.
$54,000,000 Hershey Sales
In First Half of 1947
PHILADELPHIA - Hershey Chocolate
Corp_, in reporting its earnings for the first
half of 1947, also ~ tarted for the first tim e
to give the tota l volume of its sa les. Many
firms in the candy and gum field continue
to issue reports on earnings but do not give
amoun t of total sa les.
The sales volume for Hershey on all i t~
products for the first half amounted to 554,-
000,000 in round numbers. With increased
~ugar supply it expects to make some gains
during the rest of 1947.
The firm has set up a reserve " for future
inventory price decline," said to cover cocoa
beans with a present market price of about
30 cents, compared with eight cents in 1946.
The firm also paid an extra dividend of $1
per comlllon share on August 15, reflecting
its new volume of business.
All Hershey plants are running practi cally
at capacity but al locations must still be
made on some of its products.

Tax Plan Dropped
NEW YORK-City officials recently ad-
vi sed members of the toba cco trade here
that the local tax levy on cigars, recently
reported as a probability in the press, will
not be passed. The idea has been dismissed
entirely, city olli cials said.
At the same tim e, city officials said th e
idea of putting a city tax on vending ma-
chin es was also dropped. Newspapers had
rece ntly reported th at such a tax was being
co nsidered.
A new state law permits cities to collect
a special tax of 50 cents a month on vend-
ing ma chines, but ci ty offi c ials said it would
be too expensive to collect so small a fee.
