LAST MINUTE REPORTS-PREDICTIONS-FORECASTS and GOOD
OLD FASHIONED RUMORS COMPRISE THIS NEW REPORTING
SERVICE OF "THE REVIEW." THIS PAGE IS WRITTEN AS THE FINAL
FORMS GO TO PRESS ON THE 20th.
NEW EQUIPMENT DELIVERIES: The hope for quantity de-
liveries of new machines in 1946 is dimming. Short-
ages persist first in one field and then another.
Wood is critical and hard to obtain; that is, the kiln
dried type so essential for our type of equipment.
Steel shortages will afflict industry for 3-5 months ,
a survey and analysis of components indicates. Even
then, demand will far exceed supply and a voluntary
rationing system will be generally used by suppliers.
This means our Industry will get only a s~all part of_
its actual needs. Even in plastics the demands far
outstrip production with deliveries in many cases lag-
ging 2 to 4 months. Copper will continue short for
the year, despite foreign purchases by the Government
and release of the metal from its stockpile. Domestic
output will hardly meet half of demands. Best sources
declare lumber will be acute through 1946. Add this
all up and it is obvious that there will not be a
heavy amount of new equipment available during the re-
mainder of the year.
COIN
PHONOGRAPHS: AMI had national showings on their 1946
M~;~E - offering and booked far more orders than it will be
possible to deliver. Same holds true of every new
piece of equipment to be offered this year. Low price
on models so far announced has been $595 which in-
cludes Federal Excise Tax. Rumor is that one of the
FOIt
remaining manufacturers, and there are several, will
MAY
1946
shortly announce a machine at $495. In addition to
Packard, Mills, Gabel and Bally, there are two brand
new manufacturers (Harry Williams is one of them) who
have some ideas up their sleeves.
RECORDS: Watch for a general exodus of a lot of small
record companies in the months ahead. Accounts pay-
able are catching up with some of them and a gradual
elimination process is in the offing. Dozens have en-
tered this field with little or no experience or tal-
ent worth recording. Sales were brisk during the disc
shortages, but that was yesterday. Order C. O. D.
shipm~nts when in doubt.
GAMES: Littl~ chance of many new products in the
months ahead. The shortages are raiSing Hob with man-
ufacturers. The Skee Ball and Bowling type of game is
enjoying renewed favor and a Pacific Coast Manufactur-
er will announce a drastically new item in this field
to sell for $750, ' in 60 days. An old name in the In-
dustry, too.
VENDING: National joins the electric cig vending com-
petition with two models - console and upright. A
Chicago manufacturer has a cig vendor with an auto-
matic change-maKer attachment which will sell c~gs at
any price, accept coins up to 50c and return proper
change. Announcement is not expected befor~ 1947.
USED EQUIPMENT: Hang on to it and buy more, if you
need machines, Stuff is high, and will continue so
for months ahead, or until new machines cause a de-
cline. And then the decline will be gradual for new
equipment deliveries will be slow also. Right now it
looks mighty smart to keep your present equipment op-
erating as best you can for it will be mid-1947 before
you can walk in a distributor's showroom and load up
the new equipment you need and drive off with it.
