the Kirkland and Seattle shows.
Add the name of Art Rud to the never-
ending list of equipment hunters. Spokane
distributor for Rock-Ola and Jennings, Art
landed on the Elliott Bay beachhead like
a commando but didn't find much raidable
stack.
It was a very troublesome amiction, but
what an ideal marriage partner it made of
him! Cy Morgan suffered from a malady
whereby he couldn't talk and spent six
weeks in Palm Springs undergoing treat-
ment. Now recovered. he wonders if, even
now, he'll be able to get in either the
first or last word.
So Bert Farmer, veteran coinop,' went
to war. A chief petty officer, he advanced
rapidly to senior grade lieutenant. For
'more than three years Bert, assistant to the
Operations Officer of the Port Director,
supervised stowage of ammunition and
trained thousands in proper packing of
vital war supplies. The Navy awarded him
numerous citations for "a high degree of
efficiency, perspicacity, mature judgment
and initiative." When the firing ceased
Bert wanted out, but instead of giving him
the little slip -that means freedom, his
C.O. said: "Lieutenant, how would you
like to be a lieutenant-commander?" Bert
declined the additional half·stripe because
the clinkings of chutes that had hypnotized
him back in 1929 was nibbling ever-
stronger. The Navy, however, recommended
the promotion, continued to heap citations,
and installed him in Seattle's Exchange
Building headquarters.
Bert hopes to be out in June. Mean-
while, he sits in his office overlooking
Seattle's waterfront, and with a far-away
stare in his eye gazes at ships entering
and exiting Puget Sound.

The arrival of the new AMI phonograph
and its deluxe showing in the showrooms
of the M. S. Wolf Distributing Co. on
March 27th and 28th highlighted the past
month's activities in Coin Machine circles
in the Southland. Hundreds and hundreds
of operators flocked to the Wolf affair to
examine the new phonograph and partake
of the Wolf hospitality which was passed
out in liberal measures. Not only was coin-
dom rep~esented but also the record and
industry for many years and his machine
\'
shop was a prime supplier of parts when
there was considerable manufacturing ac-
tivity here back in the early thirties. Inter-
ment was in Holy Cross Cemetery on the
6th.
Count Mario Castegnaro, who produced
some of the first film subjects for coin-
operated movies in the pre-war period, was
married to Ada May Weeks in Laguna '
Beach on April 21st.
, C. D. Kemp, district manager for Aireon,
Denver, honeymooned in California during
, the past month. Another winman adding
a wife was Mike Dudkin who stopped off
in Las Vegas and copped a mighty fine
Kansas City girl.
E. C. McNeil, western representative for
National Vendors, is all set to go calling
on the merchandise operators in the 11
western states. He has just taken delivery
on a new Chrysler 46 sedan.
Aireon has added office space in the
Bekins Storage Building for their: railroad
Jad Leonard
communication division which brings the
total to 9 office rooms occupied by Aireon
there.

Ruby Shouse has returned to Pacific
Coast Distributors to take care of the
office work-and help customers make up
their minds while Leonard Micon is out.
Ruby was with Pacific Coast for over a
year and resigned last September because
of her late husband's illness.
Several of Leonard / Micon's customers
have worked out it new' angle. Music oper-
ators who have bought the new Packard
"Out-of-this-World" speaker are workine;
out a deal whereby they get $10 a week
off the top for installation of the manv-
colored speaker-which, by the way, sells
for $159.50, plus freight. Sounds like a
nice investment. Incidentally, speaker
weighs only 50 pounds, so it can be hung
from practically any ceili'ng.
Shortly before we went to press, Nels
Nelson ploughed into the week's work with
real results. Before 11 :30 a.m. Monday he
had sold 11 music machines off the floor.
At the same time, Nels flashed a sheaf
of papers representing over 200 orders for
Measured Music units which had come
rolling in the first week after he was ap-
pointed distributor for the new musio ·box.
I\,feanwhile the service business is reaching
new highs, says Nels.
L. E: Kelley and Fred Myers, of K and
M Service, are both back after l(}ng··jaunts
across the country to sign up music·hungry
operators and distributors. Kelley covered
14,000 miles in 43 days, getting all the
way to Massachusetts. Myers took the road
to the deep south, traveling 8,000 miles
in 35 days. The two of them lined up 14
distributors for Atomic, Sunshine, Liberty,
Memo and Solar labels. On their return,
H. A. Lucas set out on a trip that will
include Seattle, Montana, and south and
east as far as St. Louis .
. Pan-American Record Distributing Co.
has moved its office and stockrooms to
6245 Santa Monica Blvd. Company has
taken over the entire building at the new
address ,under a 10Qg-term lease and has
announced its intention to put out 3
million records a year.
The Los Angeles Tobacco Table expects
a large Los Angeles representation at the
. western convention of the National Asso-
ciation of Tobacco Distributors in San
Francisco on May 2 and 3. The Table has
reserved thirty double rooms for its use
at the Bay City's Hotel Stewart.
Harry Williams flew in from Chicago
the first of the month to check on local
wood supplies. Harry's New York friends
pulled some strings and he wound up in
the penthouse at the Beverly Wilshire.
"Mighty fine to get up in the morning and
see that glorious California sunshine,"
opined he.
Superior Records has recorded four sides
with Stuart Hamblen and two sides with
a very beautiful and talented youngster
known as Betsy Gay who they hope will
be another, but prettier, J udy Canova.
Another Eastern visitor in mid-month
was Nick Carter who flew to Chicago and
Kansas City on the 9th.
. Warren Taylor, of Mills Sales in Oak-
land, visited the local coin gentry on
the 9th and 10th.
Bill Simmons flew to Kansas City on the
9th on Aireon business.
Nels Nelson recently added two more
employees to handle the big volume of
service work he is getting at his place on
the Row. Bob Simpson, just out of the
army, is a Wurlitzer expert, and Manuel
Trevino was practically raised in the busi-
ness as his father is a well known operator
with the Oxnard Music Co. Nels now has
five employees working for him and says
they have their hands full handling all the
work coming his way.
Nickabob has taken on the Gray Mills
Agitene cleaners as distributors in their
Fresno and Los Angeles headquarters.
The name Osborn continues on in the
music business. The late A. D. Osborn, a
pioneer in the business, made a record in
coin-operated music and his sons, DeLoss
and Dwight have followed in their father's
footsteps. Today DeLoss is distributor for
Aireon in San Francisco and Dwight is
manager for S. & M. Sales Co., Memphis,
Tenn. Both are great boys and a credi t
to the industry.
Joe's friend was afraid of airplanes and
Joe tried to convince him that if his time
had come, etc. "So what," said his friend.
"I've heard all about that, but suppose it
might be the pilot's time instead of mine.
I might have to go with him!"

Ken Brown and ~reston Jarrell, of Coin-
matic Distributors, are planning to attend
the National Association of Tobacco Dis-
tributors convention at the St. F rancis
Hotel, San Francisco, on May 1, 2, 3, and
4. They will have the new U-Need-A
Monarch cig vendor on display at the
convention. Convention business concluded,
Preston will spend about two weeks in
Northern California visiting operators and
renewing old acquaintances.
Speaking of Coi.nmatic, the reason why
Ken Brown is sometimes hard to find is
because of the recent purchase of a Vultee
BT-13 plane which Ken is using for bUSI-
ness and sport. An experienced pilot with
over 300 hours flying time, Ken makes
