like sounding an alarmist note or blealing
in an unfavorable overtone, but be/ore em-

we made our readers a silent pledge: Give

beach, we hereby take the plunge.
• The day of the five cent candy bar is
waning, and all indications point to a one-
cen t hike. Here are the signposts that lead
to the expected increase: Corn processors
have been granted an adjustment in price
pending the OP A's final action in raising
the ceiling; in order to meet a higher wage
scale, sugar refiners are anticipating a price
boost; the cost of every type of confec-
tionery raw material has been substantially
increased; the railroads have petitioned
ICC for a 25 per cent raise in rates.
Candy ops who have been lifting a super-
cilious brow at the cigarette venders for
stuffing their packs with pennies, better
lower their brow because they may be fol-
lowing the same routine shortly.

atomic age-present·day popcorn expands
20 times when given the hot pan, but

Leave us face it, men. When sale of
popcorn products doubled during the war,
pop-ops cried "Hallelujah, our time has
come." The cold fact of the matter is that
shortages in other food lines were primarily
responsible. But the industry can hold its
wartime gains. Here's how: (l) continual
improvement in the quality of the product,
and (2) a strong promotion and advertising
campaign.

bar. A vendor with refrigeration element
