in the . automatic merchandising field, dis-
cussed them with Joe Eppler, and invited
him .to become associated with the Glenn-
Rowe Vending Machine Co. Joe accepted
and iS ienthusiastic about the vistas opening
up. He said, "The Automatic Merchandising
Industry is on the threshold of becoming
one of the most important industries in the
United States." Joe attended the NAMA
convention, and was very much flattered
that though a new-comer in the Coin Ma-
chine , Industry, he was called upon to
deliver a talk on a subject of which he had
made a thorough study: "How to conduct
a Sales Meeting."
Small but steady shipments of new
cigaret vending machines are being re-
ceived.
Dan King III, president of Western States
Distributing Co., distributor of Pace ma-
chines. was pleased to announce that Texas
has been recently added to his "exclusive"
territory. King has received his new twin-
motored airplane, and, accompanied by his
charming wife, is traveling now via the air
route over the eleven Western States.
Glenn Emory Perry was recently ap-
pointed office manager of Western States
Distributing Co., and is holding down the
fort here while Dan is covering the rest of
the territory. Before joining Western, Glenn
served 5 years in the Navy, Lieut. j. g., and
prior to that was supervisor of the account-
ing section of Forest Service.
Perry said: "I think this is a terrific field.
I had always been a big customer of coin
operated equipment, because it fascinated
me so. It is very nice indeed to be now on
the inside, and I find ,it more interesting
than ever."

United States Post Office officials have
quietly been conducting investigati0!ls ~nto
the activities of one or two local dlstrIbu·
tors of coin·operated equipment for the
purpose of determining whether these firms
have made fraudulent use of the mails.
Basis of the investigations is the suspicion
that some firms have taken mail orders,
involving in some cases many thousands of
dollars, from new operators over a period
of months and have not only failed to make
any deliveries but also have refused ' to
return deposits.
It is believed that so far no legal action
has been taken against these firms-and, of
course, until they are proved guilty they
will be considered innocent. As in all in-
vestigations of this kind, suspicion has
fallen on a number of firms whose oper-
ations have been entirely within the law.
These firms already have lost business and
goodwill because of such suspicions. It is
unfortunate that a few unscrupulous firms
should bring disrepute on the Coin Machine
Industry generally_ Much as everyone reo
grets such Federal investigations, the many
ethical firms in this locality can be glad
that the Federal Government is anxious to
clear the field of tin horn chiselers and mail
order racketeers.
Another little matter that the local Coin
Machine Industry might consider is the
question of whether to close or remain open
on Armistice Dar: Apparently about sixty
per cent of the .local firms were closed this
Yl13r, and others 'closed during the after-
noon. It happened to be a rainy day, and
operators coming iii from outlying places
to look at equipment were given quite a
run-around.
Bill Leu~nhagen reports that his record
LOS ANGELES, CALIF.
department is doing a still larger volume of
business. L. A_ Jackson; (whose novelty
record, "Three Minutes of Silence," was
wdtten up in the local newspapers and has
been in big demand by music operators)
has some very complimentary things to say
about the way aill isselIing Rhapsody
Records, especially "Adobe Hacienda." Bill
says that in several local spots this number
has metered as many plays as "To Each
His Own," and is still going strong.
Operators who recently have gone to
Leuenhagen for records include: Seville
Music Coo, Johnny Hawley, Rippee Music,
Bard Music, Roy Jones, all of Los Angeles;
Pismo Amusement, Pismo Beach; Stanley
Little, Long Beach; and Coin Amusement,
Alhambra_
Nels Nelson is planning to attend a meet-
ing of Aireon dislributors in Kansas City
toward the end of November. Nels reports
tnat his business last month ·was double
that of the month previous. Miss Jean Ed-
mondson and her associate, W. B. Elfstrom,
recently received initial delivery on a large
order of Aireon phonographs placed with
Nels. Miss Edmondson is a new Qperator
in Los Angeles and intends to use a number
of Aireon phonographs.
Jimmy Rutter is now associated with
Frank Lamb, well-kRown Los Angeles oper·
ator. Meanwhile, Jimmy's father is taking
care of the repair business office on Pico
Blvd. It is rumored that Harry Marcus will
take over the office when the current lease
expires and will use it as distribution point
for Bally parts.
Mollie Simon is now doing full-time
secretarial work for Southern California
Automatic Music Operators' Assn. at 1811
W. Pico. Telephone number is FItzroy
3887. The Association is said to have over
90 members at present.
Jay Bullock, managing director of
SCAMOA, will be in Mexico from Novem·
ber 28 to December 10, attending the in-
auguration of Mexico's new president, Mi·
guel Alaman. Jay's companions on the trip
will be several high-ranking Mexican gov·
ernment officials.
Another traveler to distant lands is Al
Weymouth, who has flown to Australia by
way of Pan American and Tasmanian Air-
lines_ One of the best-known operl!,tors in
this locality, Weymouth is Australian-born
but has not ·been back home since 1930.
Although purpose of his visit is to see his
parents and relatives again, it is expected
that when Weymouth returns, in about
three months, he will have an interesting
story to tell about the Australian Coin
Machine Industry.
Weymouth Service Co. expects to move
to its newly-purchased quarters at 4951-59
Santa Monica Blvd. in about a month.
Preston Jarrell, formerly of Coinmatic Dis·
tributors, has been appointed general man-
ager for Weymouth Service and will take
over during Weymouth's absence.
Dannie Jackson and Sam Donin of Auto-
matic Games are back from a trip through
Nevada, where they sold a quantity of new
slots. In Las Vegas, 50c and 51 machines
were sold to El Rancho Vegas, and 5c, 10c
and 25c machines to El Cortez Hotel, to
mention a few of the better known. The
sale of new and used slots also has been
going well in Northern California.
Automatic Games has a new secretary in
the person of Margie Van Bockel.
Like a good many other operators, Harry
Perrine of Oceanside has had his troubles
about location percentages. But Perrine re-
centJr had insult added to injury. Seems he
was duck hunting at Lake Henshaw not
