Travel-Hungry Americans Boost
Hotel, Auto Camp Locations
WASHINGTON-Get 'em now-get 'em
while they're hot.
No, reader, this isn't a hot dog hawker's
spiel, but merely words of advice offered
by the Department of Commerce to coin
machine operators. The Department, delug-
ed with inquiries about opening tourist
camps and expanding those now cramped
for space, indicates there are thousands of
locations which haven't been fully tapped:
motels, trailer camps, vacation resorts, auto
courts, hotels.
From the mountain wilderness of Maine
to the sun-bleached beaches of Florida blue-
prints are being transformed into an era of
unprecedented construction and expansion.
Advance reservations are flooding hotel and
tourist offices. Old locations are open Ses-
ames for additional revenue, and new ones
are lush meadows awaiting harvest.
Motels comprise a billion dollar invest-
ment .grossing $650,000,000 annually before
the war. Auto court construction had pyra-
mided to 60,000 cottages yearly before the
days of the military. Hotels are being oc-
cupied like never before. This year's first
quarter average is 93 per cent, highest in
history.

citizens are flocking to the shores and
mountains. Family cars are being gassed
and greased for jaunts to every corner of
the land.
George E. Bishop, secretary-manager of
FOil
Upper Peninsular Development Bureau of

Michigan, reports that people are resort-
property conscious and that almost 400 in-
quiries have flooded his office from people
wanting to invest from $5,000 to $100,000.
Because of the tight housing situation
many occupants of motels, resorts and auto
camps are not transients, but residents.
They're staying until other facilities are
available, and it might be a long stay.
Meanwhile, coin chutes are waltzing to a
sweet tinkly refrain.
The type of equipment most suitable for
this robust field covers everything operated
by coin. At· the one night spots-especially
those removed from theatres and standard
modes of entertainment- automatic phono-
graphs, pin games and merchandising
machines are out-coining the field. At tour-
ist and trailer camps the heavy accent is
on cigarette vendors, beverage dispensers,
candy and ice cream machines, and games
featuring amusement, such as gun and ar-
cade pieces. Hotels and motels are wide
open for equipment with a service element,
which includes radios, typewriters, shoe-
shining machines, and automatic laundries.
The outdoorsman who hu~ts, fishes and
boats, relaxes during the evening hours-
and what better aid to relaxation than con-
venient' vendors and amusement devices?
The post-war boom you've been reading
about these last five years is here. Its off-
spring, a big, strong, lusty child, far ex-
ceeds the fondest hopes of the procreators,
Mr. and Mrs. America.
