OAKLAND-A. H. Bouterious, general
manager for Mills Sales Co., Ltd., has been
spending some time in Chicago conferring
with officials of the Mills Novelty Co. re~
garding all of their post-war machines,
which Mills Sales will handle as Pacific
Coast Distributors. It i's also expected he
will complete other negotiations which are
under way for distribution of other man-
ufacturers' machines.
"We have, since the end of the war, been
kept extremely busy answering inquiries
regarding Mills Black Cherry Bell," re-

a continual stream of customers in our
showrooms inquiring about new machines
and, we are thankful to say, still purchas-
ing used equipment."
Robot Newsboy
NEW YORK-A "robot newsboy" is hav-
ing a test in a local subway station.
The robot, a vending machine, dispenses
up to 200 papers and gives change for a
nickel. Designed by Samuel Leschin, it is
said to be virtually foolproof, and scrupu-
lously rejects wrong coins and slugs.
Varied Experiences
Marked Harmon's Stint
NATCHEZ, Miss.-Following two years
of service in the China-Burma-India the-
ater, Cpl. Wilkes B. Harmon is en route
home for a furlough, and to receive a dis-
charge from the U. S. Army Air Forces.
He is a former local and Louisiana opera-
tor and will return to his machines when
out.
The following informatio~ will cover Cpl.
Harmon's tour _of duty in the CBI theater
of operations: two years ago he stepped off
the gangplank at Bombay. Several days
later he arrived in Calcutta for one day.
His next trip was to Ledo, via Indian oper-
ated train. Approximately 650 G. l.'s were
stacked in one cattle car. This, he said,
lasted for days, wi't h very little food and
water, no beds, just plain hard floors to
sleep on.
Harmon said he realized he was in com-
bat when he saw Gen. Stillwell and his
famous 38th Division (American trained
Chinese) and later when General Merrill's
Marine Marauders moved in at Kanjikoah,
about three blocks from his headquarters.
He added that he had charge of the Army
courier service and was running from strip
to strip to meet shuttle planes from all
points. He also had to pilot his own jeep
for seven days each week, and also got in
plenty of flying time without pay.
Harmon had the distinction of delivering
the letter which made Col. Merrill a gen-
eral. The general, he said, was in fatigues
and looked more like a buck private.
His next move was up to Shingbwiyang,
Burma, and later to Taipha-Ga, and on to
Maingkwin, then to Tingkawkyina, where
the first night's bivouac was very exciting
with Jap bullets whining overhead, and
everyone was scurrying for cover, and from
then on, he said, it was plenty rugged.
Tracers, whistling shells and mortar bursts
filled the night air. His unit was part of
the 10th Air Forces forward echelon, and
they were giving close air support to the
ground troops.
"We moved in and pushed the Japs out
of the city. We started building bivouac
areas on the famous Irrawaddy River,
where later Seagraves and his famous
nurses moved in to set up a hospital. The
monsoons were hell, and the days were the
hottest we had witnessed over here. The
first of '45, we moved to Bhamo, where I
later transferred to Calcutta to join the
Commandos, followed by two furloughs to
Darjeeling and one trip over the 'hump,' ·
and one 'short snorter.' "
Harmon has two battle stars on his cam-
paign ribbon and a Good Conduct Medal,
with his 18 months' combat, six months of
which he said he spent in the Commandos.
His brother, Sergeant Steve Harmon, for-
mer Louisiana Normal College football
,tar, was recently sent overseas.
