Legislative matters have concerned Mas·
sachusetts operators considerably in the
last month or two. Some proposed legisla-
tion has to do with cigarettes. A hearing
was held at the State House before th e
Taxation Committee on House Bill No. 843,
which provides for a tax of 3 cents a
package on cigarettes and would make the
temporary cigarette tax bill which expires
June 30 into a permanent tax measure. The
vending machine licenses, which, under the
present temporary law in force now, are
$20 per operator and $1 per machine are
proposed to be raised in the new bill to
$100 per operator, with the machine li-
cense remaining at the same figure. The
bill is still in th e hands of the committee
at this writing (April 9) .
The Massachusetts Cigarette Operators'
Assn. favors the 100 license bill, hoping
to keep out undesirable competition, but
the small operators objected to the big li-
cense fee, preferring to have the license
figure kept at $20.
Another bill pending, S345, sponsored
by Senator Leo Sullivan, provides for a

tax of $25 on all coin machines in Massa-
cbusetts, exempting music boxes, candy,
gum, pean ut, and postage machines. At a
hearing, Arthur Ravreby, representing the
Massachusetts Amusement and Merchandis·
ing Machine Operators, spoke against the
bill, pointing out that a large number of
coin machines would be legislated out of
existence, due to the tax. These would in-
clude penny scales, cookie, sandwich, mu-
toscope, and numerous other machines.
Ravreby is head of A. A. Ravreby Products
Co.
At this hearing appeared also representa-
tives of the New England Telephone &
Telegraph Co., the Boston Consolidated
Gas Co., and the Boston Elevated Railway.
These utility representatives pointed out
the broad scope which even included them
and asked the ponsors of the bill to amend
it, to which request the sponsors agreed.
The cigarette machine operators asked
for exemption of their machines from the
$25 tax whi ch was in conflict with a bill
previously presented and the sponsors
agreed to amend the bill.
A representative of Arthur H. DuGrenier,
Inc., Haverhill, asked that cigar machine
be exempted and that was agreed upon.
Exemption of these machines left pin
games and Arcade equipment, but due to
the opposition shown to the bill, it seems
probable that the proposed measure will
not be approved by the Taxation Commit-
tee at the current legislative session.
It is considered absolutely necessary for
the operators of all types of machines in
Massachusetts to be on the alert for new
legislative bills concerning coin machines
and present organized opposition whenever
th ey come up.
Jack Ravreby, of the Owl Mint Machine
Co., Inc., is happy to announce that he has
become owner of thi s company. He retains
th e title of pre ident and treasurer. He
says: "We are maintaining our regular

ten dealers the first week, accused of sell-

Ernest Ammen, music operator of Mt.
P leasan t, Texas, was in Dallas recently
visi ting friends and relatives after three
years' service in the U. S. Air Corps. Ern·
est served in all the North African cam·
paigns and was with the American inva·
sion forces that landed in Italy.
J. H. Lynch, Jr., member of S. H. Lynch
Co., is now in New Orleans where he is
taking training in Officer Candidate School.
J . H. is a member of the army transport
division. C. R. Brewer, also one of the
Lynch Co. executives, is visiting Dallas
friend during his furlough from the Navy.
After hi Dallas visit he will be stationed
at the Naval base in Memphis, Tennessee.
Various other members of the S. H.
Lynch Co. are serving in the far·flung
battle fronts of Uncle Sam's army and
navy. D. B. Watson, formerly in the firm's
cigarette vending department, is in the
Navy and is now stationed in England.
J. W. Lewis, formerly in the vending de·
partment, is now on naval duty in New
Caledonia. Jack Vinson is a navy man on
active duty on the high seas. C. E . Jensen
is with General MacArthur's force in
the Philippines. G. G. Grimes is a memo
ber of the Seebees in the Pacific theatre.
James B. Lewis is chief petty officer in
the navy with three years' service to h is
credit. He is now returning to active duty
after a visit with home folk in Dallas.
Two new local operators, or rather two
former operators returning to their "first
love," are C. T. Deerick and M. N.
Maples.
AI Mendez, Southern Di trict Manager
for Rudolph Wurl itzer Co., is back in his
headquarters office, after a busy trip to
San Antonio and South Texas. I t was
AI's first trip to the Alamo City since
the re·establishment of the Commercial
Music Co. office there in November. AI
says business is humming in the South
Texas sector and he sees a rosy future
for San Antonio as a jobbing center for
coin machine equipment after the war.
News has just reached Dallas that Mrs.
John Keel of San Angelo, Texas, died at
her home there recently. Mrs. Keel was
one of the best known of the women op·
erators of Texas. She was the mother of
Tex Keel and R. M. Keel, bo th operators
in West Texas cities.
Tommy Lou, one of the old time oper·
a tors of the city, has just p u rchased a
new $40,000 home.
Raymond Williams, head of the Commer·
cial M usic Co., is doing okeh in Uncle
Sam's army. He is fin ishing his basic
training in the Anti·A ircraft division, Fo rt
Bliss, EI Paso, Texas. D. J. Skiles, Com·
mercial's former auditor and office man·
ager, is carrying on as manager wh il e
Raymond helps to win the war.
Evidence that Dallas is still the mecca
of Sou thwestern Co in mac hine men is
revealed in the list of recent visitors to
the Walbox Sales Co.'s office. Coin ma-
chine men and operators from all sections
of the state were in during recent weeks.
From East Texas came L. R. Ai ley, Paris;
H. H. A ndrews, Jacksonville; Roy Barnes,
Palestine; Travis Richardson, Longview;
D. E. La ttimore, Jacksonville; Joe Tristoe,
Waxahachie and A. W. Clem, manager of
Paris Music Co., Paris, Texas. Operators
from the North Sector included Joe B.
Akers, Den ton; T. M. Clore, Sherman, and
MAY
Frank Emerson of Greenville. Visitors from
the far stretches of the West were Marvin
McLarty of Lubbock, and W. S. Harper
from Brownwood, while from Ft. Worth
where "The West Begins," came Clarence
Cleere and Carl Riehn. From South Texas
were J . B. Belin of Houston, W . H. Brad.
ley, Ga tesville; Joe Stanley, Bryan; Guy
Kincannon, Waco; Pete Massey, Kerens
and Jack Spro tt from Temple.
Dall as has 10 t its only telep hone music
operation, a casualty of the wartime short·
ages. The Magic Music Co. changed over
to phonographs and wallboxes when it
recently moved into new quarters at 525
Sou th Ervay St. Owner Tom Lambert said
his firm was unable to get telephone con·
nections to serve h is many locations in va·
r ious parts of city.
Gene Goss, former owner of Gene's Grill,
Dall as, is the new manager of W . H.
Brown's coin machine ope rations at Cor·
sicana, Texas. In co· partnership wi th Collis
Irby, Gene took over the Brown routes.
Gene has just received his discharge from
the armed services.
Mrs. C. M. Cook, owner and manager
of Cook Music Co. was on Coin Machine
Row buying music and other automatic
equipment to add to her extensive mu ic
operations at Killeen, Texas.
Gene W ill iams i the gen ial gentleman

firms-The Crown Music Co. Associa ted
with Gene is Charley Nowell, who oper·
ates the Wi lliams Music Co. Gene and
Charley are both well known to the local
cafe, tavern and nightspo t owners. Another
new music firm, but opera ted by an "old
